Under Cover has right-wing/anti-immigrant tendencies escalating in Europe with increasing conflict between moderate Muslims and radical Islamists. American journalist Rudi Flynn is recruited by a US/UK intelligence team to counter Iranian activists who are plotting to nuke soft Western targets.

Briefly …
A French writer Flynn knows is shot in the Paris Luxembourg Gardens and has his throat slit by an Islamist assassin who shouts ‘Allahu Akbar!’ as his target collapses. Flynn befriends his murdered colleague’s sexually pro-active and occasionally quite outrageous right-wing Front National mistress, Chantelle. He also works with Sophia, a seductive and very attractive Israeli agent who briefly kidnaps him in India. He is then sent to Cuba to check out a French Algerian Muslim by Leah, his Controller at the US Embassy in London. Here he gets a pointer from the Guantanamo detainee, who professes to be a Muslim moderate but is later shot as an activist. Flynn’s double agent act finally falls apart in Paris. The Iranian nuclear bombers want to execute him, and it’s about to happen when Sophia and her Israeli associates come to his rescue in the remote French Correze countryside.

Under Cover is an incredibly unique but fascinating novel that both chilled me to my core and intrigued me. It is a novel unlike anything I have read before and to be honest I do not believe many readers have come across a story just like this one, that is why I already implore you lovely readers to read this novel as I myself have never come across something quite like it and the feeling I got whilst reading it was incredible and I want all of you lovely readers to experience this feeling too! Here is a little bit about this brilliant tale.

Under Cover is an exciting, thrilling story that takes the reader from one place to another place very briskly. It eloquently takes the reader all over the world from New York to London to the Middle East and India and even then to Guantanamo. Its story is centered around a highly publicised subject and I am sure it will raise a lot of eyebrows and create a lot of debates. It is centered around the struggle between Islamic extremists and the Western culture and Western intelligence agencies and of course this subject is in the news virtually every day so it is important to read novels about the subject even if they are fictional.

Our wonderful novel follows our protagonist and American journalist Rudi Flynn (What an amazing name!). Rudi has been recruited to work for the British and the American secret services; he has been recruited to pose as a double agent and at times he is instructed to profess his support moderately for Muslims and on other occasions to voice sympathy for terrorists all in the goal of stopping Islamic extremists.

Rudi was recruited when a French journalist by the name of Anton du Prey who was married to an Iranian woman was murdered and this set of a sequence of deadly events. Soon our protagonist is thrust and immersed in a world that is freighting and unknown. He encounters vicious criminals, assassins, and many deadly women and this is where our thrilling, exciting journey begins.

Under Cover is a story written in the present tense and I adored this form of narration as it shows journalist ability and the urgency of the story plus this is brilliant as journalists are featured heavily in this novel. One thing I learned recently was that the author Phil Rowan was a journalist himself and so his ability to write facts about the career and lifestyle make it an authentic read that is believable and compelling. The author shows that he has broad knowledge on the subject of journalism and the inner workings of it and how international problems may arise when a great story wants to be released by a certain journalist or news outlet. It was very fascinating to read in my opinion and even more so because the author himself was a journalist. I always love when an author has knowledge and life experience for the subject they are writing about so the fact that Rowan did make this novel even more incredible and believable.

Rowan is an excellent writer, sure, he may have been a journalist but journalistic writing and creative writing are two very different kinds and the fact that he has managed to write a novel shows how exceptional his talent is. Not only did his writing intrigue me it also chilled me to my core because of all the killings, assassinations, explosions, action-packed fighting and shooting scenes and so much more. It was a thrill of a ride and such fun to read.

To summarise my thoughts on Under Cover I would say if you love novels that are thrillers that feature heavily on issues we face today and novels that focus on spy’s then you will adore this. This enchanting novel gets Four Stars from me!
