Winter is on 1932’s doorstep. The height of the Great Depression has seemingly transferred its malaise upon the society of fauna who dwell in the outskirts of Cumberland, Maryland and all throughout the Appalachian wild. Sadie, an American red squirrel, is convinced by her only friend Thu’jold, a great horned owl, to leave their comforts (or lack thereof) in exchange for the Great Lake Eden on the other side of the West Virginia divide. She recruits an innocent doe along the way named Rhea. Neighboring predators, a search for a rare flower, threat of mass extermination, a prison break, and a river rescue are just a few of the obstacles that this trio encounters throughout their journey to what they hope will be a better place.
What an adorable, thought-provoking, excellent book Thicket is! This book is incredible, it has flawed and astounded me, its unique plot compelled me to read and kept me entertained from beginning to end. Thicket is a unique story because it is told through the world of animals, a few animals in particular during the Great Depression, I will be discussing the plot in a little more detail in a moment, but I had to mention this straight away because it is so unique and special. This book is a dream, and I cannot wait for my children to read it when they are a little older, it is a brilliant book that can be read and enjoyed by anyone, and so I would implore you lovely readers to read it.
Thicket is set in 1932, and the Great Depression is, unfortunately, in full swing. Already I have to mention that I love the period of this book; I love history and have studied the Great Depression in great lengths. Ever since reading Of Mice and Men I was captivated the events of the great depression so to read a story about this period that features a host of unique twists is brilliant. This novel may be fantasy, but it does include historical fiction events, and I believe this is important to mention, it would be an excellent book for any adult to read as well as a teenager as it informs you of the events but in an easy to read, accessible way. Thicket follows three friends, who happen to be woodland creatures. These three adorable woodland creatures embark on a journey to survive the effects of the great depression, on their journey they encounter many things such as predators, rare flowers and traps and so much more. Because of the enthralling plot and the many twists and turns, the reader is taken on an epic journey across the land, and it makes for an informative, as well as an entertaining read.
The story of this brilliant novel is a compelling, powerful piece of literature that features many poignant themes that need to be read. I adore the meticulous character building in this story, I admire the author of this brilliant book, Terry Michael Gildow for taking the time to develop his characters, this is crucial with any novel but even more so when those characters are woodland creatures! I adore how Gildow has taken such a risk with making his characters animals, it was a risk, but it worked so perfectly! All three of the core animals interact perfectly with each other, their dialogue is eloquent but straightforward at the same time, they also share many humorous moments, and I adore how Gildow included this. I believe that an injection of humor in a story with poignant themes is crucial, so I am in awe of Gildow for including funny moments which take away the sting of the harsh surroundings.
Terry Michael Gildow is a well-accomplished author; this was apparent to me from the first chapter onwards. His profound writing style is stellar and stands out, his words leap off the page, each sentence is meticulous and well thought out with carefully chosen words to entertain the reader. What I loved most about Gildow’s writing was how descriptive his words were, particularly those of the natural scenery in the book. He perfectly describes the surroundings so that the reader can imagine themselves right in the thick of nature. It makes for beautiful, poignant. Literary moments that the reader will not be able to forget for a long time.
To conclude my thoughts on this exceptional novel that is Thicket, I would say if you are looking for a different read, one that is unique but entertaining and will thrill you for hours on end, then this well-accomplished book is for you. This stunning book gets Five Stars from me!
