Desert Chimera, Leigh Podgorski

While praying in agony for release, a shimmering specter arises from the sands to stand beside him. But this is not the one Luke has sought. Instead, this is the One from whom Luke had escaped seven long years ago, the black magician and his arch nemesis Armand Jacobi.

Torrential rains flood; rivers of mud flow. Luke is forsaken. But deep within the cacophony of the storm, Luke hears a voice calling. Following the call, Luke stumbles out of the wilderness and into Eppie Falco’s Desert Inn and Café.

Gathered here also seeking shelter from the storm are an array of fellow travelers. However, upon a clap of thunder and a burst of lightning, the café door swings open and Armand Jacobi, the charismatic black magician Luke had seen as the vision in the desert in the desert and the man from whom he had run now stands before him in the flesh.

As Luke’s battle with Armand heightens, Luke is confronted with the full horrors of his past. The battle that rages will culminate in either Luke’s final destruction or his ultimate redemption.

Desert Chimera is a thrilling, exciting novel that kept me entertained and captivated from beginning to end. The thrilling plot combined with the spine-tingling good writing floored me; this novel is unique and definitely special, ever since finishing this book I still think of it, whenever I go to a cafe I think of this book, whenever I think of the desert I think of this book so this shows you what a talent Leigh Podgorski is.

Desert Chimera follows the protagonist of the novel, Luke Stone. Luke is a young man who has had a terrible upbringing, he was the son of addicted parents who would abuse him. His father, in particular, is the worst, he has a vicious temper and whenever Luke tried to run away, his father would find him and punish him and this was a continuous cycle. One day the beatings get too much for Luke and he runs away and ends up on the streets of New York City. Luke has nobody in New York City so soon he finds himself taken in by a con man, Luke is desperate and so he went along with it, however, he soon discovers deadly secrets about him and this is where our novel starts to begin. At this point in the novel, Luke runs away into the deep woods where he finds a Cherokee Shaman who helps him discover his ‘abilities’… what abilities? You will have to read this novel to find out! Tragedy soon strikes for Luke and soon he finds himself in a desolate cafe in the middle of the desert where he is to meet his old nemesis once again for a showdown of epic proportions and this is the premise of this incredible novel!

The story of Desert Chimera is a story of epic proportions, the writing, as well as the pacing is perfect, the story is written almost like a saga. It is the story of a young man’s journey who goes from an abused boy to an enlightened man. It makes for an exceptional read, Luke’s journey is powerful, he is also human and he has encountered failures and disappointments in his life, I adored how the author of the novel Leigh Podgorski made him this way, he is not perfect, he has flaws… he is human so I adored how Podgorski captured this so perfectly.

The setting of this novel, it’s primary setting I should add is absolutely stunning. I adore novels that are set in the desert, my husband was born in Arizona so being English this always fascinated me as I never once encountered sand and desolate areas in England! The visuals of Podgorski’s writing is simply breath-taking, she has written the setting so perfectly; her writing simply is magical.
