Without warning on a sunny June afternoon, all life on Earth vanishes. Reeling and alone in the aftermath, Alan and his son Todd scrounge through the ruins of civilization to survive.
Through wildfires and tornadoes, as the deadly cold of a Minnesota winter draws closer, the two try to understand. Why did this happen? Why they were spared? They don’t realize that behind the empty sky, the entity that did this still watches.
Or that its plans have only begun.
Todd is a poignant, terrifying book that takes the reader on an emotional, as well as a frightening journey. Todd is a post-apocalyptic piece of fiction that entertained me from beginning to end. Before I even start to write my review I have to mention that this is now one of my favorite reads of 2017; I loved this book, I loved it for its unique nature and how it was not your typical dystopian novel, I loved it for its believable characters and lastly I loved it for the authors poignant writing. All of these factors combined made me fall hopelessly in love with Todd and that is why already I would implore you lovely readers to read this excellent book.
Todd is a dystopian novel in which all life on earth has suddenly vanished except for two people, Alan, a father and his eight-year-old son, Todd. Todd is an end of the world novel, but it is so much more than this, it is also a character study of a father-son relationship and how this relationship changes over the tumultuous events that occur within the story. We see Alan and Todd battle with their emotions, especially Alan with his illness and we see them battle tornadoes, wildfires, and so much more life-threatening situations. It makes for a thrilling novel that will take you on an incredible adventure of survival.
This enjoyable novel has astounded me with its poignancy as well as its breath-taking scenes. This book is a unique dystopian novel because unlike regular dystopian stories, it is not intense action the whole way through. It is a character study if anything, of two people who are struggling to survive in a desolate world as well as trying to withstand the harsh climates, situations and beings they face… beings you say? Yes! Beings, they are not humans but just know that they are not entirely alone…
As a mother, I adore reading books that feature a parent and their child(ren). I adore the dynamics between a parent and their child, and so I was engrossed very early in the father-son relationship that takes place in this novel, I loved both of these characters. Alan is a man who I immediately felt for; he is not your typical, dystopian protagonist because he is suffering from crippling depression. It is brave for an author to write a character in such way, depression is a real issue, especially amongst men because never is it discussed, ever. I know somebody who suffers from depression, only rarely. This is devastating to see so to read about a book which features a man with depression, is impressive and bold and this is already breaking boundaries, so I appreciate the author of this novel for this.
Adam J. Nicolai is a phenomenal, well-accomplished writer who has written a magnificent novel. His unique post-apocalyptic story is bold and his writing superb. I adored his descriptions of the apocalyptic setting, he managed to correctly place me in the midst of the desolate environment so that I felt as if I was right there; this is crucial with a dystopian novel, you have to feel as if you are experiencing the same effects as the characters of the book are, and I certainly did with this authors writing. As well as the Nicolai’s writing being incredibly descriptive, his writing was also emotive; he took me on a roller coaster of emotions with this book, this is thanks to the characters of the novel being believable, you root for them the whole way through, and you feel their frustration as well as their sadness. This is a sign of a genuinely talented wordsmith, so I applaud Nicolai on so many levels.
To summarise my thoughts on this amazing novel, I would say if you are looking for a thrilling, dystopian story that is a welcome change from your typical post-apocalyptic book then this brilliant novel is for you! This incredible book gets Five Stars from me!
