South of Main Street, Robert Gately

Henry Wolff regularly climbs out of his upstairs bedroom window. The neighbors think it strange that a grown man enjoys a Tarzan like swing from the roof, but then again, they all think Henry is a little strange. Recently widowed, Henry is an emotionally challenged father being sued by his daughter for financial control of the estate. Henry must prove he is normal – not an easy thing to do when you are not. Henry is different, not quite normal, not quite special. Rumors explaining his behavior run from PTSD in Vietnam to losing his son to SIDS. But Henry has a special gift. In a town divided by the have and have-nots, Henry alone can inspire and touch even the most jaded lost soul. But when tragedy strikes, can he unite his own family?

South of Main Street is a poignant, believable literacy fiction novel that will captivate you from beginning to end. This book is heartwarming as well as incredibly sad; it is full of realistic characters as well as believable themes. The themes that are featured in this novel are moving, topics such as love, redemption, and even PTSD. The author of this story, Robert Gately, manages to combine all of these themes into one extraordinary novel perfectly; one that I would implore all of you lovely readers to read.

South of Main Street is a compelling piece of literature that explores some hard themes. This book follows Henry. Henry’s wife has sadly passed away, and his luck is only going to worsen; this is because the youngest daughter decides to sue him for financial control of the multi-million dollar family estate. This is the premise of this exceptional novel; it is packed full of moments that will keep you gripped until the very end.

I adore South of Main Street; I thought it was an incredibly moving book that features a great host of characters. Henry, the protagonist of this novel is incredible. He is a man who is dealing with the death of his wife, and you can’t help but feel for him, especially when his daughter decides to sue him! He is a character that the reader can quickly get behind, he is a little peculiar, and he does have mental scars from his time serving in Vietnam, but he is still a fantastic character. I have to mention that I loved Gately for exploring PTSD in this novel, PTSD is something I know all about, my husband thankfully does not suffer from this, but I know people who do, and so I am a massive advocate for PTSD charities. My point is, I loved how this was mentioned in the book; nobody is ever the same when you return home from war, and I loved how Gately highlighted this.

Robert Gately is an exceptional author who has a talent for writing. His words were so eloquent and beautiful, and the harder scenes he writes were written with a considerable amount of sensitivity, and I admired that as a reader. His words flowed flawlessly from one page to the next, so much so that I could not put this book down. I was intrigued and entertained the whole way through so thank you, Gately, for writing such a brilliant, engrossing literary fiction novel!

To conclude my thoughts on South of Main Street, I would say if you are looking for a book that has unforgettable characters, spine-tingling good content and an author who writes exceptionally well then this novel is for you! This excellent book gets Five Stars from me!
