The Word Collector, Evelyn Dunbar Webb

First in a grammar and composition series for 6- to 9-year-olds, The Word Collector features Priscilla, a word collector too shy to share her words, making it difficult for her to make friends. Written and illustrated in a style that captures and keeps students’ interest, the story encourages a love of language–and a willingness to help others–as it reviews the four main parts of speech: noun, verb, adverb, and adjective.

Drawn from lessons and activities used in the classroom, the series is designed to complement traditional textbooks, with topics covering all eight parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, word families, and sentence structure. Each title offers a companion workbook ideal for student practice, with puzzles and focused activities aligned with Virginia and Common Core Language Arts standards.

Ideal for traditional classroom and home-school settings.

The Word Collector is a charming, lovely, eloquently written book and learning device for children. I used this book with my six-year-old child and he adored it! I have four children with my six-year-old being the oldest and I was keen for him to learn all about vocabulary and writing and this really was the perfect book for it! As a homeschooling mum, I adored using this great book to teach him all about speech, punctuation and much more; you may be thinking why am I reviewing this book as traditionally my reviews on my blog are for fictional books but this book was so wonderful and informative for my child that I wanted to review it for all the fellow mums, dads and even grandparents out there! It is a perfect learning tool for children from the ages six to nine and it can be used within a school or a homeschooling environment, so already, I would implore all of you lovely parents to use this book with your child as it really is a perfect learning book for young children!

The Word Collector is a sweet story and a brilliant learning tool; the way the novel is written and organized is simply perfect and not confusing at all. The story flows beautifully and so does the writing and this is thanks to the wonderful author of this novel. The main focus of this story is of course learning but this is done through the main character in this book named Priscilla. Priscilla is an adorable character and a character that was easily loved by my son, so much so that he gets excited when I open the book as he wants to be reunited with Priscilla! It was really lovely to read about Priscilla’s journey as she builds friendships and how she uses her words to do so.

This book is perfect for all grammar lessons as it wonderfully teaches the child about verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives as well as many other tools everybody needs. Punctuation, speech, and writing to me are very important so I am always careful as to what learning books I let my children read but this book, in particular, is so perfect and accurate that I was happy for my eldest to learn from it and when my other children are old enough I look forward to the reading and learning from it! This book really was wonderful as it strengthened my child’s speech very quickly and more than this the book is also filled with lovely lessons about sharing and making friends so I adored how these lessons were being taught to my son too! One other factor I loved about this book was the beautiful illustrations, they were really special and they sent my child’s mind into visual overdrive because when we did some drawing the other day he started to try and draw Priscilla!

The book’s author Evelyn Dunbar Webb is a captivating writer and storyteller and she wonderfully captivates the young reader’s mind. My child was not bored once when we read this book together, he was focused from beginning to end and he also laughed on many occasions due to the humour that was in the story so thank you Evelyn Dunbar Webb for understanding what a child needs to read in order to learn in a fun and exciting way!

To conclude my thoughts on The Word Collector I would say if you are looking to add some excitement to your children’s learning… especially their vocabulary learning then this is the perfect book for your child! This wonderful book gets Five Stars from me!
