The Devourer, Chris Chelser

Paris, 1858: Mercedes Fabron, pragmatic wife, and childless mother has her hands full running her husband’s fashion shop and navigating social etiquette. All of which would be considerably easier without uninvited ghosts haunting her night and day.

Out in the streets, people are dying of an undetermined cause. The newspapers speak of an unknown disease, the police speak of accidents. But when a dead man is found in her stairwell, Mercedes has every reason to suspect something
much more sinister. Only the ghosts know the truth, but they are too afraid to tell.

As if they are scared to death of what is out there.

The Devourer is a terrifying horror read that I found terrific, thrilling and extremely exciting. Chelser takes the reader on a journey through the city streets of Paris, when we are taken on this trip we witness a murder and this is the beginning of this thrilling tale.

The story of The Devourer is extremely thrilling as well as enjoyable. It is a well-written book that was a pleasure to read. The prose, as well as the structure and pacing of the book, was exceptional and I have to say, the author’s descriptions of Paris were simply beautiful and magnetic! She must have had to research Paris a considerable amount so that she could paint an accurate picture of what it was like in the 19th century and this is clear in her writing.

The compelling plot captivated me from the very beginning. Never once did I get bored reading this book, this is thanks to the well-written nature but also the incredible, fascinating characters the reader comes across.
