Spontaneous, fifteen-year-old Gretchen vows to help heal the nation from the recently ended Civil War. On the morning of President Lincoln’s death, Gretchen finds an amnesiac Confederate in her garden and believes this is her chance for civic goodwill.

But reconciliation is not as simple as Gretchen assumed. When her mother returns from the market with news that a Confederate murdered the president, Gretchen wonders if she caught the killer. Tensions between her aunt and mother rise as Gretchen nurses her Confederate prisoner, revealing secrets from their past that make Gretchen question everything she knows about loyalty, honor, and trust.

The Last April is a poignant read which should be read by everybody. It is a beautiful read that enchanted me from the very beginning thanks to the importance this novel holds as well as how brilliant and entertaining the literature on the pages is. It takes an in-depth look at humanity and what happened during and after the Civil War. Belinda Kroll, the author of this dazzling novel, navigates us through this period and god, she left no stone unturned! Her impeccable writing flaws me, this piece of literature of hers is merely perfect, and I would not be surprised if Kroll becomes a household name one day. She is an excellent writer who has written a brilliant book, and I would implore all of you lovely readers to read it!

Belinda Kroll has created a brilliant story in which three primary plot lines join together; these three plot avenues are a mysterious man, a president assassinated and the war which has ended. Kroll has beautifully weaved these three plot lines together and has done so through the lives of your average American family who have been torn apart by the Civil War.

Kroll writes her novel in a multi-layered way, and I have to say, I adored this! I loved how she has decided to tell the story through the lives of one particular family, it is genius, and for that I applaud her. The primary setting of this novel is centered around a real camp in Columbus, Ohio which is named Camp Chase. As the novel progresses, we learn more about the protagonist of the novel, and she finds out some shocking secrets that could change her course in life forever. As she learns more and more, the reader, in turn, finds out more and soon, we have a suspense on our hands, and we find out more about the mysterious mystery man, and this is the premise of this compelling novel. It is tough to talk about the plot of this book without spoiling it, so this is a straightforward plot version, but please, I implore you lovely readers to check this book out so that you can revel in the plots glory!

The Last April is a fast-paced suspense novel that kept me hooked from beginning to end. I found this novel to be incredibly fast-paced, and addictive… oh so addictive! There were moments when I had to put this book down and when I did I pined for this book, I wanted to know what was going to happen, I wanted to know what would happen to the characters I had grown to love and lastly I wanted to reach the ending! That is why I got so sad when I had to put this book down and all of this, just shows you what a tremendous writer Belinda Kroll is. Her story is accessible for all ages and readers of all interests, she has made sure to make her book of interest to everybody, and for that I admire her. It is hard to write a book that will appeal to all readers, so the fact that she has done this is utterly brilliant so well done Belinda!

Belinda Kroll, the author of this astounding novel, is a brilliant wordsmith, her words are eloquent and beautiful and flow so wonderfully. Her words were so poignant that I felt every word, she evoked some real feelings in me with her words, and that was so beautiful to read. I adored how she weaved multiple plot avenues into one big, compelling narrative. Her facts alone of the Civil War and American history, in general, was impeccable. It was apparent to me from the very start that Kroll is invested in her story, that she is dedicated to its success, the research she would have had to have done is astounding, and for that, she deserves a real applause. Kroll’s characters were magnetic, and all stood out. There was not one character that was lackluster, never once did any of them blend into the background and this is thanks to Krolls expect character development.

To summarise my thoughts on this charming, poignant, addictive story, I would say if you are looking for an easy read that has significant historical context as well as a compelling plotline and wonderfully developed characters then this book is for you!
