Welcome to 1926 Seattle, where the blues are hot and the gin is served up cold
It’s taken time but I’m slowly crawling my way up the entertainment industry ladder. I could get a lot farther, faster, if I were willing to play the old slap and tickle. Yeah…that’s never gonna happen. But my newest move is a step in the right direction and it’s my voice that earned me this gig. I feel on top of the world—right up until I discover who owns the joint.
Of all the speakeasies, in all the world, my manager had to give Lena Bjornstad a contract with the Twilight Room. Back in our hometown, before I signed up to fight the war to end all wars, I loved her with everything I had. She claimed she loved me, too.
Look how goddamn swell that turned out.
Amidst saxophone players and cigarette girls, Lena and Booker try clinging to their old anger as a shield against future pain—even as ancient chemistry still weaves its magic. And in a town where the hems are rising and morals are lowering, banked embers from the past just might ignite a bright new tomorrow.
The roaring 1920’s, magnificent Seattle, Jazz and beautiful décor and dresses…wow, It Had to be You has astounded me, this is one of my favorite books of 2017, hell, this will now probably be one of my favorite books of all time! And this is no exaggeration. This book has everything I love and so much more, the 1920’s is one of my favorite periods in time, I adore everything about the era, the décor, the costumes, the music, the architecture, the way of life, everything! So it is no surprise that I have fallen madly in love with this outstanding book.
It Had to be You engrossed, enthralled and entertained me from beginning to end, never was there a moment in this book where I checked the page number or the time, this is because I was so invested in the story that I loved every reading moment and in fact, when I did have to put it down I pined to read it once again. It really is a triumphant piece of literature from a wordsmith extraordinaire. The engrossing literature, riveting plot, memorable, exciting characters made it astounding and this is all thanks to the novels wonderful author, Susan Andersen.
It Had to be You is set in Seattle in 1926, the plot is rich and dynamic and so brilliant that I will not be discussing it at all! I am sorry to write this but I really do not want to spoil this wonderful book so I am afraid I will be keeping hush about what happens. However, if you really, desperately want to know a little bit more than read the blurb at the beginning of my review!
What I will say is that the synopsis is gripping, glorious, and magnetic…. electric I should add. The plot of the novel surprised me and captivated me on more than one occasion thanks to the numerous plot avenues and plot twists and turns. It was an all-consuming assault of brilliance that captivated and motivated me to read until the very end, the author had a binding spell on me and I was helpless, all I could do was surrender and fall into this wonderful tale.
The author of the novel Susan Anderson is a literary artisan that captivated me with her beautiful words. These words of her were full of passion and this jumped right off the page, her research alone into the 1920’s was magnificent, I love how she perfectly described and immersed me in the roaring 20’s, she wonderfully wrote about the clothes, the décor, and she even included slang from the period… how brilliant is this! I really am amazed by the sheer talent this woman has and I already know that one day this book will be huge. It may be a hidden gem one day but soon it will be a dazzling book that everybody will be dying to get their hands on.
Andersen’s writing was radiant, the words from her visionary thinking mind shone of the page luminous that I felt a glow of pure enjoyment from reading this engrossing book. It is the type of book that the reader will want to read over and over again so that he and/or she can pick up new details to fully immerse themselves in the brilliant time period.
