American private detective, Wilson Smith, is unhappy with the lack of customers for his bargirl fidelity business in Patong Town on Thailand’s Phuket Island. Wilson’s estranged daughter, Alison, a Los Angeles-based celebrity bodyguard contacts him with an offer to collaborate on investigating the death of U.S. TV star, Jeremy Sloan in Phuket. Sloan has been murdered by Tiger Swan gang assassin and escort service worker, Ling-Ling Chen. Wilson is thrilled to re-establish contact with his daughter but isn’t keen on taking on the Tiger Swan gang. Wilson and Alison attend a Muay Thai kickboxing contest where Wilson bets successfully on a fight fixed by Tiger Swan operatives. He is kidnapped and left to die in a jungle clearing once used to train baby elephants using torture. Alison asks for help from Wilson’s Thai partner, Punya, who is addicted to the mind-altering drug, krathom. With assistance from Wilson’s dog, Jeff, Punya and Alison rescue Wilson. While pursuing Ling-Ling Chen Alison uncovers the illegal importation of elephant tusks and rhino horn from East Africa by the Tiger Swan gang. Alison and Ling Ling engage in a climactic mixed martial arts fight. The Crocodile’s Tail tells the story not only of the Smith’s battle with a notorious international criminal conspiracy, it describes how Wilson and Alison come together again as father and daughter after a lengthy separation. The Crocodile’s Tail, the second book in the Wilson Smith Thriller series, is a sequel to Red Star Over Pattaya.
The Crocodile’s Tail is a thrilling, exciting journey that takes the reader on an incredible journey through stunning Thailand. This book may be set in a beautiful location but do not let this deceive you because after all, this is a crime novel, which I may add is terrifying but deviously great! The Crocodile’s Tail for me was an engrossing read that enthralled me from the very first page to the very last; I struggled to put this book down because I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen to the novels memorable characters and I felt this way thanks to the author’s incredible writing and visionary, creative mind. Robert B. Boeder is not a beginner writer. He has published four other novels. His experience is evident in this engrossing piece of literature with its riveting plot and many memorable characters. The characters themselves were brilliant, especially the two core characters who were father and daughter, this added a great dynamic to this thriller and I loved how the author included this kind of relationship as this is a rarity in this particular genre.
It may be early in my review but already I implore you lovely readers to read The Crocodile’s Tail, it is unlike anything I have read before; never have I read such gripping content and so I think that all of you lovely readers should read it! I should mention also in this point of my review that this book is the second book in the Wilson Smith Thai Thriller series with Red Star Over Pattaya being book one in the series. I have not actually read the first book but The Crocodile’s Tail can easily be read as a stand-alone. I wish I had read the first book first to get a better grasp of the protagonist of the novel so I would recommend that you read the first and the second book! If you need more convincing on why you should read this magnetic book then read the rest of my review to hear more about this gripping tale!
The plot of The Crocodile’s Tail is gripping, glorious, and let’s not forget breath-taking. This novel truly did astound me with its captivating narration and thrilling plotline in which many twists and turns occur. As well as it being a great, gritty thriller, it is also a unique, diverse one which is unlike your typical thriller and I have to say that I adored this because I was getting very tired of reading the same old thrillers so thank you Robert Boeder for writing a thriller that is fresh, exciting and gripping!
The plot of the novel focuses on the protagonist, Wilson Smith. Smith is an American P.I. working on the tropical resort island of Phuket (pronounced Poo-ket) Thailand; he hasn’t seen his daughter Alison in twenty-six years. However, this soon changes when Alison, who is now a renowned celebrity bodyguard and kickboxer, contacts her father asking for his help in investigating the death of an American TV star and this, lovely readers, is the premise of the wonderful The Crocodile’s Tail. What follows are breathtaking scenes of Muay Thai martial arts fights, a kidnapping, ivory and rhino horn smuggling and descriptions of wonderful Thai food that will leave your mouth watering. I am cautious to not say any more than this about the synopsis because I do not want to spoil the book for you but what I will say is that the storyline gets even more brilliant and I assure you that you will not be disappointed if you choose to read this wonderful novel!
Now that I have briefly discussed the plot of The Crocodile’s Tail I want to discuss my general thoughts on the story for you lovely readers so that you can decide whether you would like to go ahead and read this book or not. I really hope you do though because I would not want you lovely readers to miss out on this thriller gem!
The story of The Crocodile’s Tail is a dynamic, unique mystery that took my breath away on more than one occasion. This is thanks to the novel’s incredible pacing, which was expertly timed and wonderfully plotted so that I did not get bored on any occasion. I always measure my likeness of a book on whether I find myself looking at the page number; if I do in fact do this I know that the novel is taking its toll… in other words it is dragging and I want it to end but The Crocodile’s Tail was different than this and not like this at all as never once did I find myself referring to the page number and that is a sure sign that this book is a compelling piece of work that draws the reader in and captivates them to read it quickly and to reach the end of the book very fast.
Robert B. Boeder, the author of the novel can only be described as a talented, accomplished writer who knows what a reader wants in a great thriller. If I am correct, the author has actually lived in Thailand and this is apparent in this book as The Crocodile’s Tail is full of many wonderful, beautiful descriptions which captivated me and sent my mind into overdrive. I read every sentence slowly so that I could absorb all of the novel’s information, I truly felt if I was there and for that, I admire Boeder’s talent. It was apparent to me very early on that Boeder is a passionate, articulate writer. This made me fall in love with this novel even more. It is always great to read a novel where you feel the author’s passion in it.
To conclude my thoughts on the dynamic novel that is The Crocodile’s Tail, I would say if you are bored with the same old thriller cliches then take a chance with this gem because you will not be disappointed. It has everything you would want in a great novel and that is spine-tingling good content, dynamic, memorable characters and a brilliant author. This wonderful book gets Five Stars from me!
