It’s been five months since Susan and her best friend, Lynn, returned from their short journey to the past. While on a girl’s cruise, they’d met two ladies from Haiti, one who had “the sight.” She had instantly read into Susan’s soul, discovering an obsession Susan held within herself for a certain person for almost fifty years. To cure her of this obsession and make Susan realize that what she had in the present was far better than anything she would ever have had with James, she sent Susan back to the year 1962 to meet the real flesh and blood James.
The love affair that ensued between James and Susan was tempestuous and stormy. It wasn’t long before Susan realized that James wasn’t the perfection she’d made him out to be. As the seven-day journey came to an end, she felt almost relieved to return to the present.
One impetuous action, however, was to throw a complication into what Susan was intended to learn from the trip. Although she came back fully understanding that her present life was near perfection compared to anything she could have had with James, something keeps tugging at her heart, something that won’t allow her to fully let go of her feelings for him.
In desperation, she contacts the ladies from Haiti, only to find out that the ballerina necklace she left in the past with James is serving as a link between them and that the only way to break it, will be to go back into the past again to retrieve it.
At midnight on a cold November evening, Susan is again transported back in time to November 1962, back to the Dusky Club, where James and the boys, who will one day become the most famous band of all time, are still engaged to play.
Will Susan be able to retrieve her necklace from the past and bring it back into the present? Will the link between her and James finally be broken?
The Necklace II: Back to Brighton is a beautiful, intriguing, poignant time travel adventure that has made me fall madly in love with the romance/erotica genre all over again! The Necklace II is the second book in the necklace series. Nearly two weeks ago I reviewed the first book called The Necklace: The Dusky Club June 1962, please click on the words to read all about the first book! I was so excited to get my hands on the second novel in this series because the first book was incredible and wildly enjoyable! I had high expectations for the second book and gosh were those expectations exceeded! Linda S. Rice, the author of this exceptional novel, has exceeded my expectations and written a stellar sequel; one that I would implore all of you lovely readers to read!
In The Necklace II, the reader is reunited with old characters and introduced to new ones. In this sequel, the reader is reunited with Susan and James, but we are also introduced to a new character, Susan’s friend, John. Susan believes that she has cured her obsession of James, (the star of an up and coming band) but when she goes back in time again with her friend John (who too has an intriguing storyline), she realizes that she is still infatuated with him.
Susan soon falls into James ‘trap’ again; she cannot break the bond they share or the passion that burns between them. However their relationship is not all rainbows and sunshine, James can be very abusive, and these parts were hard to read. They were hard to read because the reader feels as if they want to shout at Susan telling her “no! Stay away from James” but she doesn’t, and that is what makes those moments hard. At the same time though these scenes are compelling and make this book an incredibly addictive read.
The story of The Necklace II is a journey that takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride that will take the reader on a journey through many different emotions. This book is almost like a character study of the characters we already know, we witness Susan change a considerable amount, but James is a character that goes on a real journey. James is most certainly a dominant character, and he can be incredibly violent at times. However one day, after a horrible event that happens to Susan, he is her knight in shining armor and is gentle, loving and most of all, protective. It is a full plot twist and makes you doubt everything you know about James. Is he this horrible guy or is it because something is causing him to be this way? Questions like this and much more regarding the whole story race through the reader’s mind and let me tell you now book lovers… it makes for a thrilling, exciting read!
Once again Linda S. Ride has written a compelling novel full of incredible moments, brilliant characters and so many more amazing aspects. Rice is a real literary talent who has managed to create an excellent time travel story/romance that is different from anything like I have ever read. It is unique and brazen, and I adored that. I love reading unconventional, extraordinary stories that are out there… this is the point of literature, to shock and entice a reader and Rice most certainly does this!
To conclude my thoughts on this exceptional novel, I would say if you are a reader who is looking to get hooked on a new time travel/romance series then The Necklace is for you! It is an incredibly intimate look at a period that I would have loved to be a part of as well as a poignant glimpse into a sometimes troubling relationship. This stunning piece of literature gets Five Stars from me!
