Michael P. Amram grew up during the Vietnam war and vividly remembers the political atmosphere of the period. The country convulsed repeatedly, spewing out new prototypes for democracy each time. Amid the assassinations and riots, one group challenged the hawkish path that the Johnson-Humphrey administration chose to follow. What the McCarthy Democrats did was quixotically rare in politics. It exemplified how a minority, beginning at the level of local government and working within the political structure, can ultimately affect the course of the federal government. Amram watched the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) dissent from within to support Senator Eugene McCarthy as an anti-war candidate and watched the political process run its course from local to national levels.
Ten Years and Change is a unique, enthralling memoir that kept me entertained and intrigued from the very first page to the last. I admit, this book is different from my usual read but it was incredible, and I am so annoyed at myself that I had not discovered this book sooner! It is an astonishing book that takes the reader on a journey, and it makes for an exciting, informative read… one that all of you lovely readers should read!
Michael P. Amran writes ten Years and Change, Amran tells the story of his life but in the eyes of politics. He poignantly writers about growing up in the years of the Vietnam War and how it affected not only his life but those around him and then he discusses the history of the war as well as the emergence of the anti-war movement. I thought I knew a lot about the Vietnam war seeing as my husband’s father served in it, but I was surprised by how much I didn’t know! I was impressed by Amran and his knowledge, I certainly learned a lot reading this book and it was fantastic to discover. I also learned about a few things I had never even heard of before, things such as the anti-war movement, of course, I have heard about groups like this, but I had not heard about this specific moment, so this was interesting and intriguing to read. Amram and his talent flaw me.
Michael P. Amran not only impressed me with his intelligence but also his impeccable writing. I am still madly in love with his writing, he writes in an elegant, tasteful way with words that flow smoothly between the pages. I am impressed still as I write this review because he did write in an exceptional, flawless way. Even with the more detailed chapters, he always wrote eloquently as not to confuse the reader. He has written a brilliant book that is accessible to everyone, and I really would implore all of you lovely readers to read it!
