Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government β€œaccidentally” drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As these incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.

The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.

“She didn’t know how many of them there were, but they were frantic. Dozens of them at least. They’d been packed in the egg, and they came out in a swarm, their bodies unfolding, alien and beautiful. Big and fast, black apricots thundering against the glass. Skittering.”

Oh my gosh, I did not think a book about spiders could be so thrilling but wow this scary and creepy as hell. Thinking about the events in this book alone makes my skin crawl. I am actually shocked by how spooked out this has made me because I do not get scared easily but the way this story of the carnivorous spiders was wrote was terrifying so I applaud Boone for creating a horror gem! Now let me tell you a little bit more about The Hatching.

Our book begins with an egotistical rich guy who is trying to impress his lady friends with a hike through the forest. He soon takes a detour into the woods and soon sees something which he thinks is a river of black… however I am sure you can guess by now that it is not. Soon news of these spiders – which are nasty little things – spreads across the globe from India to China and America and so on. There are reports of rivers of black all across the world and people are horrifically dying. Will humanity be able to survive these previously dormant creatures? You will have to read the novel to find out!

After the events in Peru, we are introduced to our main protagonist Melanie. Melanie is a divorced scientist whose life has been consumed by her love of all things science. One day a suspicious package arrives at her laboratory from Peru and she soon notices that it’s pulsating and warm (which is creepy as hell no?). Soon this object begins to crack and well…chaos ensues!

To say The Hatching chilled me to the bone is an understatement! It crept the hell out of me and made my spine tingle and skin crawl. Boone has done a fantastic job with his writing that he installed true horror inside me. The telling of the story switches back and forth between characters from around the world (which shows how widespread the problem is) and the character’s chapters are smartly short so that it makes for a compulsive, quick read. There were many unimaginable moments in this novel which really made me gasp and shocked me to my core and I have to say I haven’t experienced this from a writer in a long time. It is a brilliant piece of work from an accomplished writer and I enjoyed it so much; however, it is a very haunting and chilling one also so you have been warned!

To summarize my points I would say that if you are looking for a horror novel, which will genuinely keep you on the edge of your seat, keep you terrified to the end but also give you an enjoyable reading experience then read The Hatching. However, if you are afraid of spiders then yes, I would advise you not to read this because there are a lot of them in this novel and they are not the moderately cute animated Disney kind but horrible nasty, vile spiders! This wonderful book gets Four Stars from me!

Thank you so much for reading book lovers! Please do comment below what you think of this novel and whether you could see yourself reading it. Also, let me know if you are fearful of any animals, I find it all so interesting! Let me know also whether you read much horror, I would love to know. Thank you so much as ever for reading!

Oh gawd no!!! *faints*
Okay personally spiders are not anywhere close to my favourite critters and are only second to snakes on my “KILL IT” list. So this book is both intriguing and really freaky. I’d still love to read it though. *shivers

Hahah that is so funny!

See I never hated spiders until reading this and now I am terrified lol.

Reply

But why do you hate snakes I love snakes!! Although I had a dream recently about a snake attacking me and it put me off them for about a month but now I love them again!

Well I’ve always had a fear of both spiders and snakes. Snakes probably because I watched Anaconda when I was really young and am scarred for life. And I’ve seen too many “but by a snake” videos and pics to last a life time.

And then imagine how I felt when I watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Aragog the spider? Oh and let’s not forget the Shelob the giant spider in Lord of the Rings the Two Towers.
*shivers
And the movie Arachnophobia…

Haha, oh bless you. I am not really fearful of any animals but I do get creeped out by some! Have you ever see snakes on a plane? Lol.

Oh no ways. I avoided it like the plague.

Haha that film is quite comical though so maybe you would like it! Lol

Hey, I haven’t got my copy yet, but it’s on my list, which means I’ll get to it. There is approximately twenty books ahead of it! I love science fiction and a bit of horror so it looks right up my street πŸ™‚

There is just not enough time is there to read?! Oh gosh science fiction is just wonderful no?!

Do you have a favourite science fiction novel? (:

Difficult to pick a favourite. Anything by Phil K. Dick, Gibson, “The foundation trilogy” by Asimov. More recently, I can highly recommend “Seveneves” by Neal Stephenson. Stupendously good book.

These sound good! I will definitely have a look at these, thank you so much for recommending them! (:

I LOVE spiders:)). So I’m not reading this one out of concern for the poor, cute little creatures in case they get hurt… But a great review, Aimee.

Reply

I think you are the only person who has commented who says they love spiders? I think that is brilliant! So would you be perfectly ok with holding one? I hate anything crawly but I do admire them because they are pre-historic.

Oh yes, I regularly scoop them up and pop them outside or rescue them from the bath.

That is so sweet!

I do do that sometimes too, especially if my husband is home but if there is a huge one then I just wait for my husband lol. Im a bit of a woss!

Reply

Oh yes, if you love spiders then it will upset you when these spiders get hurt so best not read it. But on the other hand if you know somebody who hates them then recommend it because a lot of them get hurt!

It does look a cracking read:))

It really is! I love how you used the word cracking too…whether it was an intentional pun or not I love that! That word is used a lot in this novel (:

Oh is it? No… it tends to be one of my favourite words to describe a read that has me on the edge of my seat, wondering what will happen next.

That is a great word to use for that! Cracking is also a very British word isn’t it ? lol.

Yes – the words tend to spill out of the ends of my fingers as I’d say them, given that I type quite fast:).

Horses?! How can you be scared of horses? I love them.

Reply

I can understand the hate for octopuses though. They are slimy horrible creatures! Lol.

I love horror novels so this is definitely on my read list! And haha idk about the horses, they just terrify me πŸ˜‹

Yes please do because you will love it (:

Aww bless! Did you have a scary experience at all?

Not other than when I was a kind this girl was telling me about a horse in her riding yard that threw a kid off and paralysed them. That freaked me the hell out!

Oh gosh yes, that would freak you out and understandably so!

Those kind of things do stay with you for a long time so I don’t blame you!

It is so tragically sad when those kind of things happen, breaks my heart. I love horse riding though.

The first time I went was in the Dominican Republic and it was in the mountains. There was this one point those where me and all of the other people horse riding were riding our horses near this cliff and there were no railings or anything! The horse was going so damn fast and it was the scariest moment of my life. They actually gave a warning before we go to the cliff and said if we wanted to get off we had to now. I must have only been 13! Lol. Such an amazing experience though (:

Wow sounds amazing! I would never have the courage to do something like that myself!

I even know how I did it too! lol.

I loved this book too, which I mentioned on Twitter, great review, definitely not one for people who don’t like spiders, Spider gifs in the reviews also work like a charm for the Spider haters to!πŸ˜‚

It’s ‘horror’ but I have to say that I found it fun and entertaining, loved it, the pages flew by. I hope you enjoy Skitter, I liked it, not quite upto the level of The Hatching, in my opinion as it’s slightly different but still a damn fine book.

Oh my gosh they really are horrible spiders haha! Whenever I next see a spider I am going to freak out!

Very true, I think it’s the fact that they are so small too, just innocuous little spiders yet blood thirsty!πŸ˜‚

Yes I know! That is what makes them so terrifying.

If they were big horrible spiders like in Harry Potter then I wouldn’t t be scared but the fact that they are horrible and small means that they are nasty!

Definitely have a point, there’s just something about the rampaging mass of tiny critters, especially as they make a hole and lay eggs inside without you knowing!πŸ˜‚

Yes! Just big spiders would seem comical to me but these spiders are real life and who knows maybe it could happen!

I saw this post the other day that said the spider population weighs roughly 29 million tons and it would only take a year for every spider to eat every human!

Awesome, that sounds like something I need to tell the Spider haters!πŸ˜‚

Hahah! Do it! I dare you lol.

I’ll find the link and do it.πŸ˜ˆπŸ˜‚

Tell me what happens in the comments when you do haha!

Alas, nothing, they’d already seen the article, oh well, I’ll just have to find some other way to be evil.πŸ˜‚

Haha yeah.

Now that scares the hell out of me! lol. Hopefully these vicious creatures will never come into being!

If we are going by the book, they are already here, laying dormant, waiting to be discovered!πŸ˜‚

Oh my god no! Imagine! We need to start hatching a plan now…

Wait for the third and final book, if the plan in that works, win win, if not then we’re screwed!πŸ˜‚

Haha! We shall wait and see!

Pun NOT intended lol.

Reply

Oh no I couldn’t, if I put spider gifs in I think some people would kill me lol.

………and that is why I used Spider gifs!πŸ˜‚

Hahah! You’re evil lol.

Lol, that is very true!πŸ˜‚

Haha I am only joking though!

Ah, but anything goes on my blog, being evil, sarcastic, swearing, etc, it’s all good, my blog is like a house of ill repute, not a place for the PC brigade.πŸ˜‚

I love that! I swear in some of my reviews too. Some people are so serious these days, that is why I like to make my reviews light and fun and I am glad you do the same too!

Well, I only occasionally swear, The Hatching, Skitter and The Mirror’s Truth was mega foul mouthed.lol But it is what it is, as you say some people are so serious now days, I got pulled up by one on my blog before.lol πŸ˜‚

Haha did you! That is funny.

I had somebody the other day that they will follow despite my ‘vulgar language’ HAHA! People these days man!

Lol, had to smile at that! Not rude, not swearing, not filthy or even dirty language but vulgar, damn, it must have been bad to be deemed as vulgarity!πŸ˜‚

It’s crazy right?! Hahah. Oh gosh, the ONLY swear word I have ever used on my blog – I am taking in about three posts max – is the word fuck.

Come on is that really so vulgar? Haha.

Ha, it’s not that bad, if you want vulgar check out my The Mirror’s Truth by Michael R Fletcher Book Review, it’s vulgar to the extreme compared to simply using f#ck and oozes sarcasm at the start to.πŸ˜‚ and someone said it was the best review they’ve read, I guess some people don’t mind and even like swearing whereas others don’t, though in today’s society swearing isn’t a big deal.

The only reason I write f#ck instead of the actual word is because I don’t want to end up in spam jail on WordPress.πŸ˜‚

Oh now I need to read this review! After I have finished writing this comment I will head over and check it out.

Ha, that review would make people who don’t like vulgar stuff cringe, their eyes would bleed!lol πŸ™‚

Hahah, so funny! Maybe I should be evil and forward your review to that person who said mine was vulgar lol.

It’d definitely be amusing!πŸ˜‚ Though as I’m very much in the ‘it’s my blog, I’ll write what I want’ frame, I doubt it’d end well if they moaned about the language!πŸ˜‚

Haha no, I just dont know why people dont concern themselves with their own blog you know?!

Sigh, that’s true, I’ve had the PC brigade on my blog before, taking offence when none was meant!πŸ˜‚

Haha, people these days!

It was my own fault, I dissed Y-A!πŸ˜‚ The other part, nah, shouldn’t have taken offence at all!πŸ˜‚

Haha, now I’m interested.

What did you say about it? Lol.

I apologised.lol Then realised to hell with it, I shouldn’t have.lol

Haha no, never go back on what you said (:

I didn’t, merely apologised as I wondered WTF the person had taken offence to! πŸ™‚

Exactly! Lol.

I know its funny isnt it, some people get really high rate about it but some dont. Weird!

And luckily I havent been spammed yet for saying the F word lol. That is a good point though and I need to be careful!

Nah, you’re fine, it’s your blog comments section and you are commenting, it’d be me who would get spammed as I’m from another blog, likewise on my blog comments I can swear and it’d be the bloggers who are commenting/swearing that could get spammed.

I have to be careful, I like that I haven’t been spammed, means I can always laugh about it when others are….unless it happens to me of course! lol

Aww ok, understood! And yes, be careful, it would be awful if your blog was deleted because they can do that cant they?

I’m not sure, from what I’m aware bloggers usually complain to askimet (the spam blocking site) and get it lifted or go around commenting on loads of blogs and get the bloggerss to unspam the comments, that gets them out of spam jail, some even write a post that they are in spam and want help getting out.lol

I guess they could delete the blog though. πŸ™

Aww ok, this is all good stuff to know! Do you know where you can see your spammed comments? I used to be able to find the section but I cant no more!

There’s a spam comments section in the wordpress mobile reader, I often just check mine in there when I remember but also on the comments section of the wordpress dashboard there should be a section for spam, I think it just says something like (8 spam comments) and you have to click on it to see more.

I need to check this feature on my phone and try to find them! Thank you!

So tell me more about yourself! I love meeting new people on here (:

Ah, well, I’m not a redheaded booklover!πŸ˜‚ Yeah, can you tell I’m sarcastic!πŸ˜‚

Erm…..I’m a book blogger, shocking revelation right there. My names Drew and just like the blog name, I have tattoos! I don’t know many people who read, hardly any really and so I decided to start a blog, it started on March 5th last year. I’m mainly a fantasy fan, but do on occasion read other genres, like real-life serious spider books!πŸ˜‚

I also dabble in poetry and the very rare discussion post.

Haha, this is amazing. Nice to meet you Drew! I loved hearing more about you.

I need to hear what tattoos you have! I have three but my husband has many more! How old are you? (:

I’m a 13 year old adolescent man boy!πŸ˜‚

Nah, I’m old, 35 though lots of fantasy bloggers seem to be old, older than me, lots of other bloggers are to. Blogging wasn’t something I had ever considered up until last year so I came to it really late.

Haha well nice to meet you! I am 22 and yes! I can still be a great wife and a mother at this age lol. My husband is older too so it is all good!

I blogged a little when I was younger but now I do it quite a lot! Do you live in America?

America?!?!?!? Damn, do I come across as a Yank?!?!?!lol Nah, I am from the UK.

Haha no! Not at all, it just seems that everybody on here is American lol.

That is true.

Guess where I am from!

Antarctica??? πŸ™‚

Haha no! Although I would love to live there!

I’m from the U.K. Like you! Although I live in America as I married an American at 17!

Ah, OK, no offence was meant by my Yanky comment!πŸ˜€

Oh no no offence taken! Haha.

Damn, I’d better try harder then!πŸ˜‚

Haha ruthless!

When I first went over to America they said to me “is it true that all brits call us yanks?” And I said no of course now! Maybe I’m wrong lol.

Maybe, though I’m quite Americanised with my language and sayings, so who knows, what I spout isn’t always the English way!lol

I think everybody is these days no? Especially with all the American Tv and movies. When I watched preacher recently I literally mastered the southern accent haha.

Never got into Preacher. I completely agree with you though, it’s down to all the US films and TV shows, also books, even the damn UK authors, from UK publishers use American spelling now!πŸ˜‚

No really! But it is the best show ever! Now you have to tell me some Tv series you do love lol.

And I know right! What is up with these publishers. I hate it too on the laptops over here because it corrects my English spelling to the American and it is so frustrating!

My eldest children though know to use the British spellings and I said if a teacher has a go at them then she will have to speak to me lol.

Ha, very true, the worst words for me are colour and grey or the yank equivalent color and gray and sad to say often I find myself using the yank version, then having to change it!πŸ˜‚

It’s just weird, especially when it’s a UK author with a UK publisher, you’d think it’d be in English, but no, strange.

Favourite TV shows, Black Sails, TWD, Z-nation, GoT, Gotham, The inbetweeners, Bad Education, Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Goldbergs, The Big Bang Theory, Flash, Arrow, more that I can’t currently think of, I don’t really watch much TV, prefer reading really.

Oh, I wrote a post on foul language in reviews yesterday, quite an interesting read as you suffer with the use of vulgar language, most people aren’t bothered by swearing.πŸ˜‚

Haha me too! I even have a slight accent now and it sucks!!

Oh my god the walking dead is my favourite show ever!!!!

Ok, so who do you just adore from that show? Also I love Game of Thones and The Inbetweeners!

Did you see the US version of the Inbetweeners? I am sorry but it was tragic! lol. Plus over here a lot of Americans find the uk version offensive! Haha, I think it is hilarious and I still watch it to this day (:

I saw a couple of episodes of the US version but it was awful! Not surprised they find the show offensive, probably don’t get half the words used in it!πŸ˜‚

Favourite TWD characters, tough one, probably the cliche answer of Darryl and I like Negan too, even he comes across as camp, always liked Glenn and Maggie together, but much proffered the older series to the last couple.lol Can’t stand Carol and Morgan, sigh, they annoy me!πŸ˜‚

Haha I dont know how people could find it no funny it is amazing and gosh it really is atrocious lol.

Not a cliche at all, I love those characters, Darryl and Rick and Michone I adore but then I love Morgan too! Oh my god when THAT happened I cried my eyes out that was so cruel of Negan! Although he is pretty badass and next series is just going to be amazing!

Oh my god you have to link your post to me right now so I can read it! (:

Thank you!!

You’ll have to let me know what you think!πŸ˜‚

Haha I loved it !!! I love how you are always so bold always to write anything! Lol

Thanks, and yeah, I guess I do write what I want, though even with the swearing the post was far more polite than a couple of others I’ve written!πŸ˜‚

Haha I love that though (:

It certainly makes things interesting! πŸ˜‚

Haha it definitely does!

Have you ever seen that show?

I do love wordpress because it is great for people to talk about books, I love it!

That’s very true, compared to other blog sites it’s definitely easy.

It really is (:

Also I am trying to get into the fantasy genre so can you recommend some books for me?! (:

Lol, I’d hope I can recommend books from the genre I like, I wouldn’t be a very good blogger if I couldn’t!πŸ˜‚

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, both recently released and both awesome. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams, The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne, The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, The Greatcoats series by Sebastian de Castell. And while it’s not fantasy, I’d highly recommend The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis to read.

Wow these sound great! I will go have a look at these on goodreads and add them to my list.

Thank you so much!

Reply

And yes, it may be horror but it is so FUN! I had such an enjoyable time with this novel and really loved it (:

Definitely fun, I’m mainly a fantasy fan and for me, it was great to read something that is just good fun.

Oh now you have to let me know some good fantasy books!

Exactly! It was just really great fun and that is so amazing (:

The Boy on the Bridge, it’s the sequel to The Girl With All The Gifts, which I haven’t read, but it can be read as a standalone. It’s good, serious, especially compared to Skitter!πŸ˜‚

Oh really? I have not heard of this! I really want to read the girl with all the gifts but I haven’t got round to it. So is this book the same premise? (:

I’m not sure!lol There’s mention of a previous convoy by the name of the Charles Darwin, not sure if that is in the previous book (I haven’t read it) if it is then yeah, I guess it’s similar but if not, I haven’t a clue. Being honest after I’d read this could be read as a standalone I stayed away from reading any The Girl With All The Gifts reviews beforehand, just to see how easy I could pick it up.

Haha ok, I will check out this book for sure though. So wait is it still a zombie book? lol.

Yeah, though they are called hungries and it’s got a serious tone, it’s not like The Hatching done with zombies!πŸ˜‚

Haha no, not at all. You’re so funny!
