They said it was for our own good. They lied.

From the number sewn into her sleeve to the scraps of food in her rations, Simone’s days in the run-down protection camp have been dictated by the harsh, restrictive demands of the Colonel. Unfortunately, Simone doesn’t like following rules. A defiant break from camp brings her face to face with the ivory tower and the festering secrets of their dark history.

Faced with a forgotten past, a rippling effect of consequences from her disobedience, and a bleak future of mind-numbing factory work, Simone must decide—how much she is willing to give up for protection.

Pale bricks is a poignant, intense, dystopian novel that thrilled me from beginning to end. This book is probably not for the faint-hearted, it is a hard-hitting read, but it is also a truthful one. The author of this magnificent piece of work K.L. Stein takes the reader on a journey through the apocalypse and shows what it really would be like. She does not hold back in describing the violence as well as terrible assaults, it may be a brutal read at points, but she speaks the truth because those things would happen. Not everybody would live in harmony with each other, especially when I tell you soon about the conditions of such a place. My point is, is that although this book can be hard-hitting, it is also genius and incredibly captivating. I was addicted from beginning to end and loved it so much.

Pale Bricks is a compelling dystopian novel set in the not too distant future. The world is no longer as it was, it has been virtually destroyed by a mysterious contagion, and because of this, humanity has had to revert back to primal ways. They now live with little technology, and humans are herded almost like cattle into labor camps. What happens in one of these camps as we join the protagonist of the novel, is extremely shocking but thrilling at the same time. It is an all-consuming read that deserves your full attention, is quite utterly brilliant and I would implore all of you lovely readers to read it.

K.L. Stein, the author of this novel is phenomenal, I loved her writing and what I loved, even more, was how dark and hard-hitting she made it. She writes in such a way that the pacing and tone of the story are relentless, you are always forced to be alert, to keep up with the fast-paced, intriguing plot, it makes for an incredible read and one that I enjoyed immensely. I adored her creation of the protagonist of this novel, Simone. She could be described as a heroine, but she is not your typical heroine. Think Katniss from The Hunger Games, this is how I would compare her, she is a fantastic character and one that propels the story along perfectly.

To conclude my thoughts on this brilliant, harsh, dystopian book I would say if you are looking for a book that holds plenty of intrigue and mystery as well as a thrilling narrative then read this book because you will not be disappointed! This excellent book gets Five Stars from me!
