Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Paper Journal, Harrison Kitteridge

It is nearing the turn of the 22nd century, and Sherlock Holmes isn’t having much luck trying to be a detective. Social networking has morphed into a single, centralized, government-linked platform called The Archive. Every citizen has a Personal Archive File, which records all the significant (and most of the insignificant) moments of their lives and is open to everyone else. Birth records, school records, medical and financial records (virtually everything anyone could want to know about a person) are readily accessible to anyone who takes the time to look someone up. In a world that is ostensibly without secrets, what use are the keen deductive skills of Sherlock Holmes when they rarely reveal anything about a person a quick Archive search wouldn’t? Add to that the recent development of a new crime-solving computer program, and human detectives are on the cusp of extinction. Unable to make a living at his chosen profession, Sherlock often falls into despair and abuses cocaine and morphine to quiet his mind.

Sherlock takes on a case involving a prolific blackmailer, and the lengths to which he goes to resolve the matter reveal a dark, incredibly manipulative side of him that leaves John Watson doubting whether he ever knew his dear friend at all. Sherlock’s actions set in motion a catastrophic sequence of events that threaten to destroy his relationship with John, which both men are coming to realize is deeply felt romantic love.

Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Paper Journal is a phenomenal and unique reimagining of the original Sherlock Holmes novels written by the talented Arthur Conan Doyle. The reimagining of this much-loved work written by the excellent Harrison Kitteridge is endearing; as well as it being endearing it is individual because never before have I read a Sherlock Holmes adaption like this one. Unlike Doyle’s novels, this is full of romance and the romance is between Sherlock and John…. I know, how brilliant is this! It is safe to write book lovers that Kitteridge is a talented author for being bold in his reimagining so this novel indeed is brilliant, and I am excited to read what Kitteridge imagines next.

The Adventure of the Paper Journal is a story which follows the much-loved characters that are Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Kitteridge has paid homage to these two fantastic protagonists while putting a twist on them. Kitteridge in his novel describes the deep friendship that is growing between Sherlock and John but like a lot of close friendships, there’s develops into feelings of love and lust. Kitteridge slowly brings them together all while the reader gets to experience a brilliant classic of a mystery story. The mystery of this novel is hard to describe because if I were to do so, it would spoil the whole book and I do not want to do that as this book is sensational. What I will write about the story of this book is that the mystery revolves around a new technological advancement that has happened thanks to the Government. The new development is making detectives retire all over so as well as this book being a great mystery, Kitteridge also makes the reader aware that such technological advancements can happen and what it would mean for crime as well as the people. It is an interesting question that Kitteridge has laced throughout his novel so as well as this book being a romance and mystery, it is also thought-provoking, and these three components make a stellar piece of fiction in my eyes.

To be honest, I am in love with this book and if this is not clear already, then please know this. I do not know what is more alluring about this book, the beautiful, striking cover or the incredible unique synopsis. What I love most about this book is that Kitteridge is loyal to Arthur Conan Doyle’s original pieces of fiction and so I am wildly impressed. The fluidity of Kitteridge’s words are natural and in no way forced; the fluidity of his words make The Adventure of the Paper Journal an easy to read novel that is fresh and original. What is more than this is that Kitteridge has a talent for writing a thrilling plot as well as being spot on with the characterization of his characters. Who can forget to mention also that he is a fantastic writer who is whip-smart in his writing because he has managed to write a mystery and a story that will stand out amongst the crowd or Sherlock Holmes reimaginings? Yes… I am quite obsessed with Kitteridge and his talented piece of fiction.

To conclude my thoughts on Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Paper Journal, I would write – if you are looking for a book with a thrilling plot, puzzling mystery and a book that will keep you guessing from beginning to end, then this exciting book is for you.
