Everything about this book was exceptional; the flawless writing, combined with the story and then the historical context, was utterly brilliant and that is why Scarred is one of the best civil war novels written. Scarred is a civil war novel that follows the protagonist of the story, Zach Harkin; a sharpshooter who is feared by the Confederate Army. Zach is a man who does his job impeccably well but one day, his best friend is shot by the enemy, and this sets him on a course of revenge. When Zach finds the enemy shooter and kills him, he wants satisfaction and to know he avenged his best friend. So he searches the man’s body but what he discovers does not give him the comfort he wanted but instead a sour taste of dissatisfaction and a terrible feeling of guilt and sadness. What he discovers is that the man who shot his best friend was not as horrid as first thought as he felt bad and to make matters worse, he was about to leave to see the love of his life. This new information makes Zach fall into a vicious cycle of depression and grief, and so he decides to travel across the country to make amends with the family of the enemy he killed. The premise of Scarred is just this but please know that so much more happens; this is a book that is not to be spoiled, it is a novel to be read fully and experienced so read this wonderful book to find out more!

Scarred is an incredibly dynamic, unique piece of work that took my breath away on more than one occasion, the pacing of this story was wonderfully written and plotted so that I did not get bored at any given time. I always measure my likeness of a book on whether I find myself looking at the page number; if I do in fact do this, I know that the novel is taking its toll. Scarred was different than this as never once did I find myself referring to the page number and that is a sure sign that this book is a compelling piece of work.

Scarred is a brazen novel and this is one of the many attributes I love about it. It shows the reader that war is not at all pleasant and that those who fight or have been involved in some way will be left with scars (both physical and emotional) for the rest of their lives. Michael Kenneth Smith shows the reader that war can cause some serious mental health issues and that the majority of the people who have killed will always struggle with feelings of guilt and turmoil. PTSD is terrible, and as my husband is a Marine, I know many people that suffer with it, so I thank the wonderful author for shedding light on this subject all while incorporating it into a brilliant story.

The author of this exceptional novel, Michael Kenneth Smith, is a well-accomplished author who has a great skill at placing the reader in the midst of the action. He perfectly set up the scene of the book so that I could easily find my way inside the story, as well as this he has managed to develop some flawless characters. The characters the reader encounters are believable as well as likable… especially the protagonist of the novel. I thought he was brilliant, in fact, he was more than this, he was incredible.

To conclude my thoughts on this exception novel, I would say if you have been bored of late of civil war books that well, don’t entertain you, then take a chance with this one because it is an all-consuming assault of brilliance that will keep you entertained from beginning to end! This incredible book gets Five Stars from me!
