Petty Officer First Class Zack Martin’s physical wounds that were inflicted when his ship was attacked by friendly aircraft while on patrol in Vietnam have healed. His psychological wounds are another story. Recently, the flashback dreams about his friend Campbell’s mortal wounding from that terrible morning have diminished, but the panic attacks have not. His fiancé Camille is pressuring him to leave the Navy and seek help. To add to his dilemma, word has just recently been received that his new ship, a destroyer, is headed back to combat duty in Vietnam waters.
Martin is reluctant to throw away nearly ten years of his navy career. He must soon decide whether to seek psychiatric help at the Navy Hospital and accept a medical discharge or suppress his fears and sail once again into harm’s way.
In ‘The Third Tour,’ Bob Stockton draws on his personal experiences and more to deliver a fast-paced, action story of Navy combat both on the high seas and along the dangerous brown water rivers of Vietnam, placing the reader directly in the line of enemy fire.
The Third Tour is a poignant, moving memoir-inspired novel written by an incredible man who is a Veteran who served in the Navy. As my husband is a Recon Marine, I have always loved reading books about the Military; this book caught my eye in particular as the blurb looks as if the book will explore themes of PTSD as well as explore the Vietnam war. Bob Stockton is a talented author and his memoir, Listening to Ghosts was phenomenal… so much so that it made me have high hopes for this book! I am so pleased to write that these expectations of mine were exceeded! This incredible story was flawless, I do not know the author Bob Stockton personally, but if I did I would tell him what an incredible man he is and how much I admire and thank him for his service!
The Third Tour is a brilliant book which is laced with accounts Stockton himself experienced or witnessed. The Third Tour follows the protagonist of the novel, Zack Martin, a Petty Officer First Class, who has healed from his wounds he received while serving in Vietnam. Although his physical wounds are healed, his emotional and psychological ones are not and these are the hardest to treat. Zack soon starts having panic attacks, and they only continue to get worse as he starts having visions of his friends wounding. His fiance begs Zack to seek help and leave the Navy but Zack is a proud man who is proud of his nearly 10 years service, and he does not want to throw it away now. The Third Tour is Zack’s journey as he must decide whether to accept medical discharge and seek psychiatric help or to stay and keep serving and aggravate his already open psychological wounds.
Without a doubt I am madly in love with this book; I am in love with it thanks to Bob Stockton’s riveting literature, I am in love with it because of the story, and lastly, I love this book because it highlights some critical issues that people do not openly speak about. The Third Tour needs to be read by everybody as it highlights conditions such as PTSD and how war changes a person. I know all too well that war changes you and serving changes you, everytime my husband returns I see a little bit of difference, and it is normal. Soldiers who return home are changed forever, some can cope better than others, this is a fact, but some struggle beyond comprehension and I adore how Stockton highlighted this.
Bob Stockton is a brave and incredible writer. His words are captivating and flow beautifully from one page to the next. I adored how Stockton manages to keep his readers entertained from beginning to end; he managed to grasp and hold my attention the whole way through. This is thanks to the fact that The Third Tour has plenty of action, soul, and inspiration. It is an incredible book; one that I would implore all of you lovely readers to read!
To conclude my thoughts on this extraordinary, thrilling, emotional tale, I would say if you are looking for a military read that is honest as well as engrossing, then this wonderful book is for you! This stellar read gets Five Stars from me!
