Ever since the birth of modern roller derby in the 1930s, this dangerous and dynamic sport has lit up the souls of millions of fans worldwide. Players risk life and limb in dazzling displays of daring, skill and strength, and audiences shower them with enthusiastic adulation and affection.
During the 1970s, roller derby became a sports entertainment phenomenon in North America. Matches were broadcast live on television and banked-track arenas were packed out with crowds cheering wildly for their favorite teams. In the 1980s, a deadly virus threatened to strike down many talented players. This book tells the inspiring story of one of these athletes.
As a child, Tim Patten watched his first roller derby match and initiated his lifelong love affair with the sport. After training incessantly, he eventually joined its ranks. He competed professionally for twelve years before going on to own a derby league.
With honesty and wit, he recounts the true story of his rise in this thrilling sport, and of his battle with the disease that threatened to end his life. You’ll experience his most intense and spectacular moments on the banked track and meet some of the friends he made along the way. This is a tale of passion, ambition, and the indomitable human spirit, and about finding and keeping true love.
My Kill Play is a brilliant, fascinating, poignant book that will take its readers on a thrilling journey of sport and hardships. Tim Patten is a new found author of mine who I adore! My Kill Play: When a Virus Hijacked the Roller Derby is a moving book that explores an epidemic, a phenomenon and a transcending time in history. My Kill Play is a unique book, and I would struggle to find a book that could even begin to resemble its story. It is a beautifully written memoir which chronicles the early days of the AIDS epidemic. However, it explores the epidemic through sport – in particular, the Roller Derby – and how it affected this sport and its players. Tim Patten takes his readers on the story of his life as he gives his readers a rare insight into topics in history that are not openly discussed. He gives his readers unique insight into how the game of Roller Derby is played and what it takes to play. As well as his informative, thrilling writing, he also takes us on a journey on the history of Roller Derby and how it grew from almost nothing to a worldwide phenomenon that touched many people. He lets his readers know about the stars of the roller derby and gives a unique insight into their lives, explaining that many of the star players had battles both on and off the track with their health and their rivals. My Kill Play truly is a phenomenal book that can’t be compared to any other book and those books, in my opinion, are the best kind of reads.
Tim Patten is an incredible man, and I applaud as well as thank him for sharing his story with the masses. What hit me early on was that Tim Patten has an impressive ability to express his story, as well as his numerous experiences in a touching, emotive way that will make his readers think and feel many different thoughts and feelings. Life is not easy, and I adore how Tim was so brazen and brave in his writing which expresses this fact – that life is hard! Life is full of ups and downs, and Tim perfectly expresses this throughput his wonderful book in an elegant, sensitive way.
