What If: An Anthology of Short Stories, Kerry ONeal

Asking the simple question What If, where the answer is expressed in eleven stories from this author’s first anthology of short stories, Kerry ONeal pushes the limits of imagination from a bucket list we’re all challenged to complete before the end of our life, to being confronted by a ghost who wants to replace the soul of a loved one. With the combination of fantasy, the paranormal, ghosts, Sci-Fi horror, and inspiration, ONeal’s characteristic dark humor, and his savory taste for the macabre and the unknown, extends the bounds of the predictable, and brings us to the brink of sanity and insanity, loneliness and friendship, and into the horrors of human and inhuman existence.

Anthologies are brilliant books for those readers that like to pick up a book and read at random parts of the day. I personally love anthologies because they work around my busy schedule, if I am waiting to pick my children up from school, waiting for an appointment, then I can pick an anthology up and get lost in one story. What If: An Anthology of Short Stories makes for the perfect read for anybody who lives a busy life as well as a regular one. The eleven stories in this excellent book, written by the fantastic Kerry ONeal, cover a broad range of genres such as science fiction, horror, fantasy and supernatural. Each genre explored in this book, and the stories that relate to it are utterly chilling. Each story will manage to compel, entertain and terrify you in one way or another. If you are a reader who adores anthologies of ghost stories then What If will be the perfect anthology for you to get lost in.

What If is a collection of eleven stories written by the talented Kerry ONeal. Each story written in What If reads like a mini-novel, each story also beings with a preface which describes the general tone of the story and I have to admit, I adored this as never before have I see this done in an anthology. I could sit here for hours writing about each story and what I loved about each one but we would be here forever! That is why I am going to write about just one of the stories… my favorite story in the hope that it will compel you to read this unique book. My favorite story in this book is titled ‘The Shadow’ and the preface reads

‘A ghost is referred to in various terms, including apparition, specter, phantom, spirit of the dead, spook, soul, wraith, and shadow. But do they actually exist? And if so, why do they haunt some of us, and not others? There are numerous accounts throughout history, where some believe that a ghost is the soul or spirit of a dead person, or animal that appear to the living. The skeptics scoff at the idea of ghosts, and can be explained by psychology, misperceptions, mistakes, and frauds. But what if there’s another explanation. What if it involves something dark, and sinister?’

This quote is taken directly from the book still has the ability to send chills down my back. Not only is this short preface expertly written by ONeal, but it is also incredibly accurate. Do ghosts exist? And if so why do they haunt some but not all. When I read this, I knew that The Shadow was going to be one of my favorite stories. This is because it could shut me off from the rest of the world and make me engrossed in a flash moment.

Kerry ONeal is the talented author of What If and I have to say, he deserves an award for this book of his. His incredibly powerful, moving, sinister book will leave even the bravest of us shaking and scared! I admit I was thankful that I was only able to read What If during the day because if I read it at nighttime, I would be terrified! That is why I have to compare Kerry ONeals work to that of Stephen King or Robert Bloch; two most loved authors of mine. Both of these authors have an unnerving talent to terrify the reader but also captivate readers at the same time, and this is precisely what ONeal did to me with each and every story of his.

As I am sure you readers can guess by now I am madly in love with What If and so, I have no choice but to award this book a dazzling Five Stars! Its stories, characters, plots, and rich literature is utterly brilliant and should be awarded. I would implore readers who love all branches of horror to read this book and readers who adore anthologies because What If: An Anthology of short stories truly would be the perfect read for you!

My inspiration in writing short stories for my book, is to share my thoughts and interpretation of simple questions that we all experience in our lives, which can be categorized under one question, What if.
