The quiet city of Atlas is ruled by the colorful and narcissistic Peter Atlas, who force-feeds propaganda and life-size images of himself upon its citizens. The populace is devastated after a vicious attack that their beloved vigilante failed to stop.
Twenty years after his death in a densely wooded area of the city, a man returns and torments those who have wronged him and anyone else that might detract from his media attention. His primary target is the CIA – no, not the Central Intelligence Agency.
Three men attempt to uncover what makes them who they are, while the man who cheated death strives to destroy the lives of everyone who ruined his.
The killer who knows nothing but bloodshed, Raymond Tanner.
The winning boxer whose missing father causes his rage, Nathan Nolte.
The police lieutenant who recently moved to the city and struggles to cope with urban life, on and off the job, David Moxley.
Where do I start with Brutal? As I begin to write my review, I still am shocked by what I have just read…a great shock I may add! Brutal is an incredibly powerful book that managed to compel and entertain me from beginning to end. Never have I ever read such a brilliant, vigilante story that is full of a wealth of depth and subplots. Sadly many crime novels lack originality, they can be full of cheap thrills and lackluster characters but in no way is Brutal like this. Brutal is an original, fascinating look into a story that covers a broad scope of time that will enthrall its readers from the first page. The plot is intricately written with many subplots laced throughout it to ensure that the reader is never once bored. Blake W. Morris, the author of this fantastic story, can only be described as a talented wordsmith and if you adore crime then Brutal is a book that should not be missed… it would be a crime to do so!
Brutal is an in-depth novel that is set in a small, quiet city called Atlas and we follow three crucial characters in this small town as they all battle with their own issues. Raymond Tanner is a killer who is a man who wants nothing more than to cause devastation to everybody, Nathan Nolte, is a man full of anger and spite ever since his father disappeared and lastly David Moxley, is a police lieutenant who is trying to adjust to being a city police officer. All three of these characters lives are intricately laced, and the whole story that takes place in Brutal surrounds them. Because the shock factor of Brutal is so considerable, I am cautious to write more about the plot. What I will type is that Brutal is a fast-paced, thrilling, terrifying novel that will have readers gasping from the twists and turns the reader experiences.
To say I am in love with Brutal is an understatement; I adore crime novels, especially those with a thriller/killer aspect but what I love more than this is a crime novel that has subplots and different core characters that we can alternate between. That is why Brutal is such a standout novel for me because it encompasses everything I love about literature. It has thrilling, terrifying moments that made me feel as if my heart was in my mouth, it has shocking moments thanks to the breath-taking twists and turns, and lastly, it has brilliant characterization that made me love and hate characters… in other words, they were all believable!
The reader has the talented author, Blake W. Morris to thank for these three wonderful factors he has managed to effortlessly lace throughout his novel. His incredible words will keep the reader turning the pages at an alarming rate and will keep a reader enthralled from beginning to end. I was wildly impressed with how flawlessly and quickly Morris managed to create a story; from the get-go, I already felt the sense that Brutal was a fully formed story with a steady streamlined plot and as I have now finished the novel, I can say that I was not wrong at all! Brutal indeed is a fantastic, engrossing book and if you are a reader who adores crime, especially vigilante justice stories, then Brutal will be your dream come true. Because of how much I love this book and how captivating its story was, I have no choice but to award Brutal a magnificent Five Stars!
