The undercurrent of the 1950s runs contradictory to the sugary vanilla life promoted on the TV during that time. Making a name for yourself draws attention from both sides of the street. No one knows this better than self-made business owner Joey Toranetti living in the midst of big crime families in his town. Navigating around crime bosses and MOB influenced politicians Joey manages to do whatever he must to protect his family and his business. As the title of the book “The Other Brooklyn” implies, we follow Joey through some unbelievable and gripping situations that require him to use his own street smarts to survive in such a tumultuous environment.
How do I begin to describe a novel in which no words will do it justice, do I begin to describe how exceptional the plot is, or better that, how incredible the author Bob Ieva is? How about I just start my review by writing that The Other Brooklyn, which combines three novels, each of them called The Hitman, The Franchise, and The Final Offer is both of these things; an exceptionally well-developed plot combined with flawless prose and engrossing literature. Bob Ieva, the author of the sensational The Other Brooklyn is an incredibly talented man who has a winner on his hand’s thanks to this book. Already I think that The Other Brooklyn would make for the perfect Netflix Tv Series. I believe this because its plot has dramatic prose, exciting moment and lastly, characters that will engross you from beginning to end… what is there not to love!
The Other Brooklyn is a combination of three books, The Hitman, The Franchise and The Final Offer, all three of which follows the star of the series, Joey Toranetti. Joey Toranetti lives in 1950’s Brooklyn and has made something of himself, he is a business owner, and although his business may be small, he is expanding and surviving against the mean streets of Brooklyn. Toranetti lives amongst some of the most sinister MOB crime families and Toranetti must tread carefully around them as he has to ensure the safety of both his family and his business. Toranetti is no pushover though and the readers will get to witness this as he faces some of the toughest people in Brooklyn by using his street smarts and hidden talents. It makes for a thrilling journey that is not to be missed by anybody.
The 1950’s is an era I love, I always knew I was born in the wrong decade so reading books set in this fascinating period of time which was full of Hollywood starlets, notorious criminals, and pivotal politicians is incredible. The Other Brooklyn is a novel that perfectly describes the 1950’s and 60 ’s, Bob Ieva takes his readers on a journey on what it was really like, especially on the streets of Brooklyn in a time when the crime was rife. Ieva does not sugar coat anything, instead, he enlights his readers on the harsh and brutal realities on what it was like to live in the 50’s, and I applaud him for doing so and for writing such an accurate portrayal.
As I am obsessed with the 50’s I have done my research over the years on what it was like during this era and sadly with most books set in this era, I find faults. With The Other Brooklyn though, I could not find one error. Bob Ieva is phenomenal as he has managed to bring this era to life in the most flawless of ways and not only with what it was like to live in this period in time. Ieva perfectly describes characters who feel real and they feel real because they are inspired by actual people of the era. Even if they weren’t, Ieva is so true to the 50’s and the history of the MOB that they feel real regardless as he has written such an accurate portrayal of the people of the decade.
Bob Ieva is an incredible talent, not only for his flawless descriptions of the 1950’s Brooklyn but also because of his creation of the enigmatic Joey Toranetti. Toranetti is a character the reader will be able to easily root for, he is a family man, a hard worker and somebody who wants a peaceful life. Nearly everybody will be able to relate and admire him for wanting such things and for having a family so when trouble comes his way, the reader is already hooked on his character and rooting for him and this is all thanks to Ieva and his phenomenal characterization.
The Other Brooklyn truly is a fascinating, intriguing novel that will show you the brutal realities of the 1950’s and so, because this story truly is excellent, I have no choice but to award this incredible book a thrilling Five Stars as it is brilliant!
