On the march, around the campfire, and in the taverns, they tell incredible stories about Tarmun Vykers, the Reaper – how he’s never been cut in battle, how he once defeated hundreds of men by himself, how he exterminated an entire people over an insult. These stories make Vykers seem like a god, but he is a man, an arrogant, ruthless and bloodthirsty man. For all that, he may be the only thing standing between the human race and utter annihilation at the hands of the mad wizard who calls himself the End-of-All-Things. Against this backdrop, smaller, lesser folks struggle to fulfill their own destinies, folks like Aoife, burdened with a secret so dark she is driven to do the unimaginable and seek an alliance with fey powers no mortal has ever encountered.

Steel, Blood & Fire is a novel that has shocked me to my core and entertained me more than I could of ever have imagined. The sensational story laced throughout this book is a brutal, violent but compelling that is highly addictive. This novel may not be for the faint heartened but I believe even the faint-hearted would grow to love this novel as just like the mad wizard in this story, the author Allan Batchelder casts a spell on you and compels you to read until there is no more left to.

Steel, Blood & Fire is a multi-layered novel with many different narratives and layers that contribute to this book being a superb piece of military/fantasy fiction. It follows a host of different characters, but the focus of the story is Tarmun Vykers, also known as The Reaper who has lived made frightening tales. He is a character who is ruthless as well as brutal in his ways and stories are shared around about how he has never encountered a wound, destroyed hundreds of men by himself and how he has a quick, fiery temper which has made him destroy somebody for something as little and insignificant as an insult. In other words, he is the human version of Ares! If you are not familiar with Greek Mythology, Ares is the God of War but he is notorious for being violent in his ways and wearing the skin of his victims. The Reaper does not do this however they share traits and that is why I make this comparison.

Tarmun Vykers is a man feared by many but he is called upon to destroy an evil wizard, known as the End of All Things who wants to destroy all that lives. Soon the reader will witness an epic battle in which blood will be spilled and let me tell you now book lovers, it is graphic but brilliant!

The story of Steel, Blood & Fire is one that captivated me from the first page thanks to its quick, fast-paced nature and multiple narrations. The novel is told from the perspective of numerous different characters, and I adore this plot device used as it adds an extra layer of brilliance to Steel, Blood & Fire. It made this read for me even more entertaining because I was able to immerse myself in the story and many characters points of views. Please know though book lovers, that although this book may have quick chapters and changing narratives, it is a book that is over five hundred pages long so it is still full of a wealth of brilliant literature you can sink your teeth into!

Steel, Blood & Fire is essentially a novel of fighting evil with evil, and I have to admit, I love this theme. Centuries ago, when war would rage over and ravage the earth, evil was always used to defeat the enemy, it is still the same now in the modern age so I admire Allan Batchelder for being pure to military tactics. As I mention the word military, I can’t help but think that Batchelder is incredible because he is true to the way of war. He does not sugarcoat war or murder, he is violent and graphic with his descriptions and this is how literature about war should be.

Not only is Allan Batchelder epic with his storytelling, but he also is with his literature. His flawless writing combined with his intriguing characterization make Steel, Blood & Fire a stellar read. As you reach the end of one chapter, Batchelder will captivate you once more and surprise you with twists and turns galore to ensure that you never tire or get bored of this novel. This is a sign of a true wordsmith, and so I have no choice but to award Steel, Blood & Fire a brilliant Five Stars! What is so great about this story to is that Steel, Blood & Fire is book one in a four-part series which may or may not have more books in the work. My point is that this is an excellent series to invest in, especially if you love violent, bloodthirsty books that will entertain you for hours on end!
