“How long must we suffer for the sins of our past?”
Julia, brilliant yet humbled by cruelty and abuse, overcomes great disadvantage to become the richest person in ancient Rome.
Living a double life, she wields power from behind the scenes to bring vengeance down upon those who wronged her.
When her schemes ensnare Rome’s two greatest generals, Lucius Cornelius Sulla and Gaius Marius, Julia provokes civil war and condemns herself to suffer for the sins of her past.

Our Eternal Curse: Another Self is book one in a three-part series written by the talented Simon Rumney, and I admit I am obsessed. Rome is a place I love thanks to its wealth of history and as a woman who studied the classics Rome is a place I have had to research on more than one occasion.  So to read a fictional tale weaved around not only Rome but ancient Rome is fascinating to me, and so as I wrote I am already obsessed.

Our Eternal Curse: Another Self follows the star of the novel Julia but Julie is no star to her parents, in fact, they mistreat her and in their bitterness, force her to pick olives all day long. Julia, however, is a woman who wants more from life and she tries to keep herself happy and the light of Julia’s life is her younger brother Robertus. However, life is cruel and soon fever takes Robertus and although Julia’s parents do not care, Julia feels it profoundly and she struggles to carry on.

One night, when Julia is fetching water she is taken away by a Roman general and when she did she thought her luck had changed… that this will bring the change she has dreamed of but she soon realizes that she is, in fact, one of many women the general ‘owns.’ The reader will follow Julia on her journey to overcome the General and his ways whilst seeking revenge on him; we accompany her on this transportive journey across the plains of Rome and it makes for a truly stunning read, one that should not be missed.

The story of Our Eternal Curse: Another Self is a multi-layered unique one that deals with many poignant themes that you would not typically read in a historical fiction book. The themes explored in this book are sensational, themes such as reincarnation, possession, and even politics. The inclusion of Roman politics is a fascinating aspect to this novel and a highly informative one that was a joy to read about. The author Simon Rumney has clearly researched ancient Rome at length as this book is full of a wealth of historical knowledge; knowledge that I would read from Cambridge history books so I admire him for his dedication to his book and for making sure every fact is accurate and for weaving such a brilliant story around such facts.

Simon Rumney is a talented author, not only for lacing his book with brilliant history as well as his flawless writing but also because he was able to bring his characters to life. The characters in Our Eternal Curse: Another Self are simply superb and their narratives jump right off the page and will grab the reader by their chest. To read a novel that is set in ancient Rome means that the character have to reflect the ways of this century and Rumney has most certainly done this with his host of characters. As well as Rumney having brilliant characterization throughout his book, he also has a power for his descriptions as his descriptive sentences made me feel as if I was right there.

As I am a huge lover of this book and all that it holds, I have no choice but to award this stunning book a dazzling Five Stars! Please read this book as it is excellent, I adored every moment of it and am excited to get started on book two, so keep an eye out for this in the next week!

Being ‘cold called’ (cold emailed actually) was a surprise to say the least. My initial reaction was to ‘spam’ the email because my experience with book bloggers had been mixed at best. Something about the details in the email told me to reply to Aimee. Her further reply was so specific to my books, I wanted to know more. We exchanged more emails. I had a look at her web page. Like a budding relationship, trust grew. We did a deal. Review all three books in my series for a group price. I sent the money. I waited for the right amount of time, and now there is a review of my first book.

Aimee understands what I was writing about. She didn’t judge the irrelevant stuff. She focused on the character’s journey not her own technical ability (like some reviewers). All the things which readers really need to know when making a decision to invest time and money in a story.

Book one is done and posted on Aimee’s site. I await the second and third with my previously cautious resignation giving way to excited anticipation.
