Ellen has led a disappointing life. She is married to a man she no longer likes and is unhappy in her job. She is finally ready to make changes but she suddenly dies. Quite unexpectedly Ellen finds that her consciousness has transferred to her pet dog Barney. Her life should be much more straightforward as a miniature schnauzer but then again it might not. Leaving home and finding a new family is just the start of her strange new life.
When I first read the description of The Dog and The Girl – the description written above -, it was like the author Fiona J. Roberts had already captured my heart. Those few words “but she suddenly dies” had me hooked, they are grim words, but the nature surrounding them intrigued me. I wanted to know what had happened to the female protagonist of the story and wanted to know what her journey into the ‘afterlife’ would be like. Very rarely am I hooked from the description alone but this description and the general premise of the story fascinated me. I loved The Dog and Thr Girl, and I hope that you readers will too.
The Dog and The Girl is a contemporary fiction novel that has a profound theme of a woman dying and finding her consciousness has transferred to her pet dog, Barney. Ellen is the woman who this has happened too but before I discuss the events after her death, let me first address her life before. Ellen’s life before her death could be summed up in one word… disappointing. Life has been cruel to Ellen, she has had set back after set back, and she finds herself married to a man she despises and having a job she hates. However, when Ellen is finally ready to better her life and remove herself from the slump she has been in life deals her a sad blow and she dies.
Ellen will soon wake up in her pet dog’s body, for reasons unknown her consciousness has transferred to her dog, and this might just be her second chance at life. It may not be the life Ellen expected, but still, it is the second shot she desperately wanted and the reader will follow her on her journey to find a new family and start a new life.
The story of The Dog and The Girl is one that deeply moved me thanks to its host of poignant themes. Although The Dog and The Girl could be considered a somber novel, it is an uplifting one as we get to follow a charming protagonist on her journey at another life. The story is mostly a character study of one character, and it makes for a memorable, lovely read that will entertain its readers for many hours… I know I was!
The author of The Dog and The Girl, Fiona J. Roberts is an exceptional talent who clearly has a knack for writing original stories that leave a lasting impression. The brilliant prose of this woman’s literature is incredible and inspired me beyond belief. Robert manages to hypnotize me with her exquisite writing that compelled me to read. The characterization of Ellen, in particular, was flawless, I adored following Ellen on her journey at a second shot, and revered that it is in the most peculiar of ways. I love novels that stand out, and The Dog and The Girl most certainly does this.
As The Dog and The Girl is a stunning piece of fiction that installed a sense of calm and excitement in me and will do so in other readers too, I have no choice but to award this stunning book a dazzling Five Stars!
