In the fantasy land of Ismark a child slave called Eirick has his life thrown into chaos and adventure by a blaze in his slave encampment. Thus starts the journey where we join Eirick on his life exploring new places and battling cultures.
Meanwhile around him lays a more hidden world of political manipulation, greed, treachery and barbarism.
In this first book of the new Ismark series we enter an exciting and wonderful original fantasy world inspired by ancient Norse culture as well as touches of Roman and Persian culture as well as adventures exploring the darker and more noble aspects of people that must live in such a world.
Ismark: The Marked Boy is a novel that hooked me from the description alone. As soon as I read that Ismark: The Marked Boy is inspired by Ancient Norse Culture, and Roman and Persian Culture I was hooked, I mean, how could I not be considering the classics are a huge passion of mine and a subject I have studied from a young age! As I am a huge lover of these subjects it is no surprise that I was destined to love this novel, however I am in no way biased because although I have given this book a very high rating – a rating you will find out at the end! I judged the story and writing and these two components combined with history and Norse, Persian and Roman culture make Ismark: The Marked Boy a stand out novel that is not to be missed.
Ismark: The Marked Boy is a stunning piece of fantasy fiction that will keep its readers gripped for many hours on end. The novel (the first in a series), is set in the land of Ismark and follows the life of one child called Eirick; a young boy who is a child slave who has known only pain and suffering. After a particular event, an event I can’t spoil! The protagonist is thrust into a world he has not seen before, he is now having the pleasure of experiencing life beyond chains and starts to explore and learn. However, life is not always bliss, and soon a troubling conspiracy will unravel which involves, treachery and political manipulation. What ensues is a thrilling, addictive piece of fiction that will stay in readers minds for a long time.
The story of Ismark: The Marked Boy is one that captivated me very early on thanks to the obvious inspirations laced throughout its literature as well as the author’s impeccable world building. The vast scope of the land of Ismark is astounding and will baffle readers minds with how large and dense it is. The focus of this land is the Sorian Empire who want political, economic and military control of the rest of the land. The use of a looming empire over the horizon from the author, J.H. Lillevik is fantastic because centuries ago they were such empires that tried to control every aspect of a nation. The fact that Lillevik has managed to weave a plot around this one theme is genius because it will inform readers that such things and such empires did exist and that to me makes for a fascinating read.
J.H. Lillevik is an impeccable writer who has earned the title of a talented wordsmith. This is thanks to his experience in writing over twenty years but also because of a sheer gifted talent. The originality in his story is brilliant and his writing brazen and raw. I adored the raw nature of this novel and the gritty aspects; Lillevik is an author who does not shy away from troubling topics. Topics such as child slavery for example… this is a topic many authors would shy away from but Lillevik is bold with his work and decides to tackle the issue head-on and weave a brilliant, and entertaining story around this sad truth.
As Ismark: The Marked Boy is a sensational novel I have no choice but to award this stunning book Five Stars thanks to its thrilling nature, incredible prose, and brilliant characters!
