This is a story about duty, revenge, murder, and horror.
The system failed Tyler McDermitt. He and his brother have vowed to protect unfortunate youth from a similar fate – or at least make those responsible, pay. The McDermitt brothers, victims of child abuse and molestation, escaped their hell and have decided to clean up after the failings of a flawed justice system.
The rough streets of Dorchester, South Boston, have hardened two aspiring vigilantes and prepared them for a mission. One brother has a good heart, a conscience, and a burning
compassion. His twisted sense of morality has burdened him with a deep sense of responsibility. The other brother is as hard as nails and as cold as ice. He is hell-bent on revenge and aims to ensure the other stays the course.
A motivated young detective is on their scent; she and her veteran partner look to foil McDermitt brothers’ plan.
Something from the boys’ past – something dark – is also closing in.
Gripping, brutal and phenomenal are three words that come to mind when I think of What Lies Within; a remarkable crime/serial killer novel that is written by the very talented Robert Smith. Robert Smith’s book is one that intrigued me as well as terrified me and one that restored my faith in serial killer novels! I mention this because sadly I have only been finding serial killer/crime pieces of fiction that are generic and unoriginal so to read a unique crime novel, that has a unique premise about killers who kill for revenge because of the failed justice system, is incredible, and forced me to read for many hours.
What Lies Within follows the two protagonists of the novel and the enigmatic duo, The McDermitt Brothers who are out for revenge because of the failings of the Justice System. This pair has experienced the worst kind of abuse, they have been victims of child abuse, and molestation but the justice system has failed these brothers, and now they want revenge, not just for them but for all the future children the justice system will fail. They are protective of abused children and feel a significant amount of responsibility to get justice for them.
The reader will follow The McDermitt brothers through the mean streets of South Boston as they embark on their vigilante mission to get justice not just for them, but all the other abused children. What unravels is thrilling, but also gruesome that will have the police and one detective in particular fast approaching to discover who they are. Will The McDermitt brothers succeed in their plot? Read the extraordinary What Lies Within to find out!
The story of What Lies Within compelled me to read from the very beginning thanks to the unique premise of the story. The story is unique because the brothers are trying to receive justice, but they are just doing so in the most unorthodox and violent of ways. I admit, this book made me question my own morality on more than one occasion. When I read What Lies Within I felt the feelings I experienced when watching the hit tv series Dexter. For those of you that do not know about Dexter, Dexter is a tv show that follows a man called Dexter who is a serial killer. However, he only kills other killers and evil men…interesting right? Well, this is how I felt when I read What Lies Within as the crimes committed were committed with good intentions – if that makes sense! So if you are a reader who loves being tested then What Lies Within would be the most perfect novel for you and now that I think about it… why is What Lies Within not a tv series?!
What Lies Within is distinguished thanks to Robert Smith’s exceptional writing and his superb characterization of The McDermitt Brothers. The two brothers featured in this novel are characters that will intrigue and fascinate you for hours on end. I was genuinely intrigued by this pairing and was astounded by how different they were from each other. You would think that this pairing would have the same personality traits due to their shared and horrendous experiences, but they could not be more different from one another. One brother is full of compassion for the abused, as is the other brother but this brother has a good heart with poignant intentions. In other words, he has different viewpoints on his brother’s plans which are incredibly sinister. His brother is one that is hell-bent on revenge, and he will not let anybody, nor anything get in his way. He is a man who if you saw on the street would run a mile from thanks to his oppressive stance and mean glare.
Robert Smith is the author we have to thank for creating such a fantastic and imaginative duo. Smith is not only talented at writing unique characters but also gifted at writing a brilliant story. The story in this book is astonishingly original and will fascinate all readers thanks to the many themes explored. What I adored most about Smith’s literature was the fact that he does not shy away from gore and horror; instead, he embraced it and used it to evoke feelings of fear as well as excitement in his readers.
As What Lies Within is a truly sensational, gripping story I have no choice but to award this gripping tale a majestic Five Stars! If you are a reader, who is looking for the next best crime/serial killer story that this is the one for you… it would be a crime not to read it!
