Very rarely do I come across a fantasy novel inspired by Chinese history so when I discovered The Sage, The Swordsman and The Scholars I knew that I had to read it. The story of this book is sensational and sent my inner history geek into overdrive thanks to the amount of historical context/history laced throughout the thrilling story. As I read this book I was genuinely impressed as well as astounded from start to finish and so already I have to recommend this brilliant book for all you lovely readers as I do not want you to miss out on an exceptionally well written and entertaining story!
The Sage, The Swordsman and The Scholars is set in the Middle Kingdom as it is under attack from enemy invaders that arise from the sea. The evilness of these invaders and their wicked intentions cause havoc as well as destruction across the Middle Kingdom and threatens to disintegrate the Ming Dynasty forever. The reader will follow ‘a young and legendary swordsman’ as he tries to defeat the evil invaders once and for all and restore peace and harmony to the Middle Kingdom as well as the crucial Ming Dynasty and this book lovers it the premise of this historical fiction tale.
The story of The Sage, The Swordsman and The Scholars is one that blew me away with its imagery, descriptive writing and enigmatic characters… oh, and who can forget the evil invaders! Each one of these components would make any story great, but the fact that this novel has all of these themes makes this book a sensational stand out novel in the Historial fiction/action and adventure genre.
The themes explored in The Sage, The Swordsman and The Scholars is phenomenal and all of them are perfectly weaved and blended together to make one outstanding book… one that the reader will not be able to forget for a long time! The themes of high fantasy, combined with martial arts and of course Ancient Chinese history blew me away and made me fall in love with this novel. As I read this book I found myself being compelled to read, it was like the author, Pierre Dimaculangan had a spell on me and was forcing me to read. His gripping narrative and his phenomenal and original story make this novel absolutely brilliant. The themes of military/Chinese history were exceptional and had me turning the pages like a mad woman!
As The Sage, The Swordsman and The Scholars is a genuinely gripping, thrilling, action-packed story that will engross many readers for many hours, I have no choice but to award this book Five Stars!
