Beyond the Virus: HIV Infected My Blood but Not My Life, Matthias Gerschwitz

Matthias Gerschwitz, a German author and marketing freelancer living in Berlin, is HIV positive. The virus was detected in 1994, but likely transmitted in 1992. In 2009, he wrote a book about his life with the virus, which now is available in English, too.
The author is one of more than 80,000 HIV infected persons in Germany (as of October 2015) and one of the only a few to go public with his infection. The tone of the book corresponds with his personal way to handle his infected life: pro-actively, openly and with optimism. Since there is antiretroviral treatment, the virus has lost most of its threat. But that is no reason for easing off attention.
»Beyond the Virus« offers an intimate view into the life of a positive man. The book covers the author’s very personal circumstances, experiences and insights. Also general information about HIV and the antiretroviral treatment found its way into »Beyond the Virus«, thus connecting the personal insight with interesting and relevant knowledge on how HIV is viewed in Germany today.

Beyond the Virus: HIV Infected My Blood but Not My Life is a profound and moving memoir/medical book that has the ability to help those with HIV, those who know somebody with HIV and also help change peoples outdated, and sadly discriminative thoughts. Beyond the Virus is primarily a memoir and as I am sure you readers know, I adore memoirs, especially when they are written by an exceptional person who has an interesting story to tell. Matthias Gerschwitz, the author of this incredible book and narrator of his own story, has just that – an incredible and inspiring story. Gerschwitz perfectly shares his story with his readers so that he can generate awareness on the topic of HIV and how it can deeply affect your life and the attitudes of those around you, as well as inspire anybody to keep fighting and to keep spreading awareness about a topic you are passionate about.

Matthias Gerschwitz is most certainly passionate about spreading awareness about HIV, and in his charitable and awareness efforts, he has received great honors that prove that the work he is doing is phenomenal as well as life-changing. Before I discuss more about Gerschwitz and his work, I would first love to update you readers about him and his journey. Gerschwitz is a German author, living in Berlin who is HIV positive. Gerschwitz has been HIV positive for 24 years I believe, and during these years, he has been on a journey which at times has been tough as well as life-changing. The one attribute that will strike you when you read this book is that Gerschwitz is a fighter and he is not one to give up, and as the title of this book suggests, he looks beyond the virus and does not let it affect his life. The reader will be taken on the journey of his life as he discusses how he lives with HIV as well as cover some personal topics which are not commonly addressed in medical books. Gerschwitz also correctly described treatments on offer which will benefit and inform those that live with the virus and people like me, who are not clued up on medications/treatment plans and what happens upon diagnosis.

Gerschwitz’s story will speak volumes to many readers, particularly those that have HIV or any illness/disability. This is because his story is an inspiring one because Gerschwitz is incredibly positive as well as optimistic. He could be described as the type of man that does not stop, even when life tries to stop you in your tracks and these are qualities and attributes that will aspire those that have an illness and or disability, and that was incredibly amazing to me.

As Beyond the Virus is an informative, well-written memoir with words that flow beautifully throughout, I have no choice but to award this stunning book a brilliant Five Stars. If you are a reader who loves memoirs with a purpose and loves to be informed on situations/illnesses that you are not aware of, then Beyond the Virus will make the perfect read for you, so do not miss this book!

Dear Aimee,

thank you so much for this warm and yet intense review of »Beyond the Virus«, my personal story about my life with HIV. My idea was not only to spread information about this disease still rather hushed up in public, but delivering facts as well as an optimistic outlook with a mixture of encouragement and linguistic entertainment. Since English is not my mother tongue, I am deeply grateful to a very good friend of mine from California, who helped me transfer my German verbal skills into an appropriate English. Your review proves we – and especially she – did a great job.

»Beyond the Virus« intends to help people understand what HIV is today, compared to what it used to be until the mid 90’s, before there was therapy. Your review certainly will help to spread this intention – and in a way may help protect men and women of all ages from either prejudice or infection … or both. This goal is worth all the efforts, and that is a wonderful prospect. Again, thank you very much.

All the best from Berlin/Germany.

Thank you so much Matthias for your kind comment as well as for telling your story. I adored the way in which you wrote your book, it was incredible and I really admire you. Thank you again!
