In the North American continent, eighteen-year-old Ebony has been living as a slave for as long as she can remember. The underground cities, the tattoo, the scars and the shackles are a part of the only world she has ever known. She knows that in order to survive, she will have to stay strong. And she will stay strong, cursing those in power, until her very last breath. She waits for a meaningful way to die as she quietly pushes her body to its limit…but that all changes when rebels from the surface drop down right in front of her.

Now, Ebony is challenged to envision a life beyond slavery as she and the other escapees are thrown into the center of a rebellion against the monarchy. She has to embrace this glimmer towards a real life…this glimmer called freedom. But what can she contribute to a rebellion that is doomed to fail like those before it? How can they stop a corrupt monarchy that has lasted for a century? Among the lower class, those with hope are hard to come by, but Ebony has found refuge with people full of it. And through their strong desire, an idea emerges…one that has never been done before. The princess of the country is coming of age and what better way to send a message to the king and queen than to kidnap their only daughter?

Gold Shadow is a breath-taking, thought-provoking and stellar read that kept me entertained from the very start thanks to the compelling story and flawless literature courtesy of the fantastic author L.C. Perry. The story of the book is incredible and is laced with many themes and underlining messages that could translate to the real world and real happenings/occurrences. The book may be set in a fantasy future but the events do happen to some extent in the world today and that is why Gold Shadow is such a poignant story that should not be missed.

Gold Shadow is a multi-layered novel that takes its readers on a memorable journey in North America, however, it is not the America we know today but rather a dystopian one. The reader will be introduced to the protagonist and heroine of the story, eighteen-year-old Ebony. Ebony is a slave, and she has been for the majority of her life, she has endured unspeakable acts, but despite her circumstances, she has remained strong and has been determined to fight for her survival. One day a rebellion starts against the monarchy and Ebony must decide whether to stay in her current circumstances or join the rebellion and fight. What follows is a thrilling story that will captivate its readers from beginning to end.

The story laced throughout the book is sensational and will provoke its reader’s thoughts. The themes of slavery and abuse are prominent in Gold Shadow, and they represent the harshness we experience in the world today while adding a fantasy twist on it. The fantasy/dystopian twist is in no way gentle because Gold Shadow shows the harshness of slavery. However, although the book has a core theme of slavery, the book is actually incredibly moving as well as inspiring because it follows one young woman’s journey from captivity to freedom and this is incredibly poignant and inspiring… especially for women who have experienced similar circumstances.

The author of Gold Shadow is the talented author L.C. Perry. Perry is a newly discovered author of mine, and I am so happy I did find her work because her literature is beautifully written and perfectly executed. Perry’s literature is hypnotic and even poetic at times and this combination of two very different writing styles ensure that the reader is grasped, hooked and thrilled until the very end. Although there is a lot of inspiration in this book, there is also honest literature that depicts slavery in a brazen light. I applaud Perry for including these moments of reality in her book because it is needed and adds to the story perfectly.

As Gold Shadow is an incredible book that will entertain, thrill and excite you from beginning to end I, of course, have to award the wonderful book five stars! So please, if you are looking to read a brilliant fantasy/dystopian read then read this excellent book and get lost in a captivating world!

Thank you so much, Aimee, for the kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the story 🙂 As you’ve mentioned in your review, the series is written to reflect certain aspects of our own society. I also wished to include equal representation, which is why there’s an extremely diverse cast of characters. I write with the intent of giving readers a story that really speaks to them and hopefully characters they can relate to. If there are ever any questions about this series as a whole from either you, Aimee, or this wonderful community, I’d be happy to answer them. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts <3

Thank you for your lovely comment L.C! I loved your book and love how it represented the real world also. You are a true talent and I look forward to seeing what you write next!
