Log line: The ghost of pirate Black Bart joins forces with two over-privileged teens and their relatives on St. Croix in a modern-day quest to discover priceless buried treasure and along the way, their life’s mission under the most unlikely and dangerous circumstances.

Careful what you wish for…
Sarah Schilling’s twelve-year-old brother is wicked smart. But this? Pure genius. Brian snagged an invitation to spend the summer with their favorite aunt and uncle on St. Croix. Uncle Jack tells them, “There will probably be some swimming, some diving. We like to run. There’s a range, so maybe you’ll learn to shoot. Cooking. Your Aunt Helen is a classically trained chef. You knew that, right? There’s the Mallard seaplane, so maybe you’ll learn something about flying. That sort of thing.”
That sort of thing sounds like too much work for Sarah Schilling’s summer on the beach. Until Brian’s scuba regulator mysteriously fails sixty feet underwater. Her training snaps into laser focus. During Brian’s rescue they unearth the 250 year-old secret of Black Bart—the pirate and his ghost. The discovery launches them into a hurricane of peril at the hands of modern-day pirates. The Schilling family will not survive unless Brian and Sarah discover the most powerful weapon that is within themselves.

Chris Malburg is fast becoming a favorite author of mine, wait, he IS a favorite author of mine, and this is thanks to his incredible literature that I have fallen in love with. Over the past month, I have read and reviewed two books of Malburg’s, the first is called Man of Honor and the second is God’s Banker; both books were thrilling and dealt with some poignant and fascinating topics that will have readers hooked and compelled to read until the very end. A Pirate’s Time Served is the third book I have read by Malburg, and although it is a different genre aimed at young adults it is still sensational, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

A Pirate’s Time Served is what I would describe as the perfect, entertaining read that is packed full of action and adventure. The reader will be introduced to the Schilling family but will primarily follow Sarah and her brother Brian. Sarah is the female protagonist of the story, and the reader will follow her as she goes to spend the summer with her aunt and uncle in St. Croix. Once there, Sarah soon realizes that she is not going to get the beach vacation she wanted because her Uncle Jack is the outdoorsy type who wants them to do all kinds of fun activities. One of the activities Uncle Jack wants Sarah to do is go diving but Sarah’s brother’s scuba regulator fails under water and upon the rescue of him, they ‘unearth the 250-year-old secret of Black Bart – the pirate and his ghost’. The reader will go on an incredible, thrilling adventure as the mystery of Black Bart is unveiled and the result is a fascinating story that will keep readers guessing from beginning to end.

Once again Chris Malburg has managed to write an entirely original and fascinating story. What I admire most about Malburg’s literature is that his writing is so versatile and he is able to jump from one genre and style of writing to another and the fact that he has been able to write a young adult novel too when he usually writes adult novels is sensational! The story of A Pirate’s Time Served is one that will keep readers guessing from the start because the whole book is shrouded in so much mystery. The adventure and the journey that unfolds is one that young adults and adults will adore, no matter your age because every reader can appreciate a great story that is full of action and adventure.

Chris Malburg manages to captivate his readers from the start thanks to his glorious descriptions. The descriptions of St. Croix, in particular, was splendid and made me feel as if I was there. What I loved the most about Malburg’s literature in A Pirate’s Time Served was his ability to craft a genius and entertaining story that will cater to all readers reading tastes. As A Pirates Time Served is another brilliant book coursey of Malburg that will entertain readers as well as thrill them with the fascinating plot, I, of course, have to award the book five stars!
