Early 1960s. The most famous actress in America, Tallulah Ivey, is in the Mississippi Delta to film a controversial move. A prominent local citizen is shot and killed outside her bedroom window. A note is found clenched in the dead man’s hand. The note holds the key to Ivey’s guilt or innocence. Was it self-defense? Murder? Or something else? Martha investigates the who, what, and why in this twisty, suspenseful murder mystery, embedded with a Paulinian allegory.
This story could be told only by me—Martha McRae. I’m the publisher and sole writer for the Bethel County Gazette.
I also run a boarding house in Solo, Mississippi. We’re just a dot on a map in the center of the Delta. Land so level and wide you could see the sunrise in the east and set in the west. Cotton and cornfields stretched as far as our eyes could see.
We’d always been a speck of a town–too small for any stop signs, much less a stoplight.
Somehow, Solo seemed to maintain a constant 310 souls. Births replacing deaths.
Deaths. We had more than our fair share three years ago when Satan paid us a visit. You can read about those murders in The Rector.
Here we are again, though, in the land of rich stories and good dirt.
Only this time, there’s a celebrity in our midst.
The Actress is a gritty, sinister and thrilling mystery suspense novel that will captivate and enthrall its readers from the very first page. The Actress is a novel I was intrigued to read about from the premise alone, the premise discusses a murder outside a famed actresses window in the 1960’s. This premise made me want to read The Actress straight away because I love murder mysteries and I love even more when they are set decades ago! The crime involves a famous actress called Tallulah Ivey, who while filming in Mississippi Delta, finds herself wrapped in controversy when a well-respected member of the town is found murdered outside of her window. To make the murder even more intriguing is the fact that the victim is holding a note that is the key to solving the murder and this book lovers is the premise of this page-turning thriller that is full of twists and turns galore.
The story laced between the pages of The Actress is sensational and unlike anything I have read before. The story is an intriguing one because from the beginning the book is shrouded in mystery and secrecy, the reader does not know what is about to happen, and so it captivates them to read because they will be desperate to know what truly happened with the people involved!
Michael Hicks Thompson is a talented wordsmith who knows how to flawlessly write crime and mystery. In The Actress, Thompson will slowly build tension over and over to one point when it will rupture, and the result of this is shocking, thrilling and entertaining. Not only is Thompson a fantastic writer who knows how to build suspense throughout his book, but he is also a tremendous author because he knows to capture his reader’s attention and entertain them from beginning to end. Thompson does just this by ensuring the reader is always entertained, and he fulfills this by lacing twists and turns as well as mystery throughout his book which will have the reader turning the pages with haste.
