Hank is one of New York’s best criminal profilers, and he loves his job. But when he meets the Bristol Butchers, all that changes. They are a pair of psychopaths—cannibals. He chases them in spite of the disabling curse they cast on him, in spite of their threats to his family, and when he catches up to them, his horror begins. They claim to be gods—immortal, omnipotent—and they change into monsters before his eyes. Unable to stop them, the battle leaves him sick, despondent, broken. His career is at an end. His only respite is his family.

Years later, the Butchers return to make good on their threats. When his family disappears on Halloween night, Hank decides his time for doing nothing is at an end.

He must chase them to places he thought existed only in myth. He knows they have the power to raise monsters, mythical beings—even the dead—to block his path. How can he, a disabled mortal, overcome gods? How will he overcome his disability, his doubts?

A short while ago I read a thrilling and terrifying novel called Demon King which is written by the insanely talented author, Erik Henry Vick. Upon finishing Demon King I was shocked, I was shocked by just how brilliant the story was and how I was so hooked on Vick’s literature! That is why not long after finishing Demon King I started to read Errant Gods and Vick did not disappoint! Errant Gods was just as brilliant as Demon King and had the same high quality of literature that managed to enthrall and terrify me at the same time! Errant Gods is a novel I was excited to read because I have been obsessed with mythology and psychology ever since I was young and even studied both subjects and so when I read the mention of Gods and Criminal Profiling in the description I knew that this was going to be the dream read and boy was it!

Errant Gods follows the protagonist of the novel, Hank Jensen, a Criminal Profiler who finds himself pulled into the minds of a twisted pair of psychopaths. For those of you that do not know, the role of a Criminal Profiler (aka Forensic Psychologist) is to get inside the mind of a killer. What these incredibly talented people do is try to think how the killer would and try to look at the crimes and crime scenes how the killer would and subsequently unravel the crime from their point of view. It is a difficult job, and I know because I pursued Forensic Psychology for a long time, so I love how the author Vick decided to make his protagonist a profiler because it tells us a lot about him as a character and his personality traits. Anyway! Back to the review. The story will follow Hank, and he will become involved with the Bristol Butchers, a ruthless pairing who are cannibals and one day on the job he pursues them but he does not succeed in catching them but what he does get is a terrible curse from them. Curse? Yes book lovers, the pairing had confessed to Hank that they are Gods and at first he does not believe it but when he sees them transform before his eyes everything he thought about the world has now changed.

Hank years later will find himself entangled in their web again because their previous threat involving his family becomes a reality and soon Hank must embark on a terrifying mission to rescue his family before it is too late and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational novel that is Errant Gods.

The story of Errant Gods is one that I love for many reasons, but some of the core reasons despite the author’s incredible literature are the themes explored, themes of never giving up and disability. The protagonist of the novel Hank is disabled, but despite this, he does everything he physically can to help his family. This for me was a really beautiful message because as a Marine wife I know a lot of people with physical disabilities and many of them felt hopeless before they received the help they needed. That is why I am in awe of Errant Gods for the author Erik Henry Vick giving disabled people a voice and showing that despite a disability, a disabled character can still be in a badass action-packed novel so thank you!

The story of Errant Gods is an epic fantasy novel that follows an exceptionally entertaining protagonist in a gripping and well-imagined world. Vick in his book has managed to effortlessly create an exciting world that is full of immaculate detail and then spin an incredible story around the world. The book itself is full of imagination and a wealth of creativity and the thrilling moments laced throughout the book ensure that the reader is entertained as well as breathless from how incredible the story is! The story itself is unique, and I love this because now that I think about it, I do not believe there is another book of this kind which is incredible! The story is exceptional, and one of the attributes I love most about it is the superb epic battle scenes! The epic descriptions of the battles that occur were splendid and played out in my mind like a movie. That is when you know a book is good book lovers, when you start to visualize every detail and forget that you are even reading!

Erik Henry Vick is an author who writes beautifully with literature that is full of glorious descriptions that will take your breath away and bewitch you.  As I read this book, I honestly felt a sense of urgency to reach the end, and I believe this was because of the author’s exceptional talent to place me right in the novel and describe his scenes (particularly the action scenes), in perfect and mesmerizing descriptive detail.

Vick’s passion for the written word and his story shines off the page and into the reader’s mind. His sometimes lengthy, beautiful descriptions will send the readers minds into visual overdrive, the reader will be able to perfectly imagine every detail the reader comes across and that in my opinion, is the sign of a talented author.

Overall Errant Gods is a captivating, fast-paced fantasy novel that will keep fantasy readers entertained for hours. The author’s descriptive writing and the twists and turns Vick laces throughout the book will enthrall you, and so I have to award this exceptional book five stars! Wow, thanks Aimee Ann!

I’m glad you picked up on the never-say-die theme–it’s an open “secret” that the character of Hank is based on myself, and his curse is based on my disability (and Jane is based on the real Supergirl, my lovely wife, Melissa). This book was the way I chose to fight my way “back to life,” it was my ladder from the deep pit that my disability had landed me in. It wasn’t easy to write, there were numerous obstacles to writing that my Personal Monster(tm) threw in my path, but with Supergirl’s help (and the help of several friends), I got past them. For anyone interested, you can read more about that struggle on my blog: https://erikhenryvick.com/2017/06/11/how-can-you-do-that/.

I can’t thank you enough for your support, Aimee Ann, nor for what you are doing for our wounded vets! Keep it up!
