Misplaced takes a glimmer of historical fact and weaves a story of conviction, unlikely friendships and mysterious forces at work in the Land of Enchantment.
What are misgivings of a young woman compared to the needs of the greatest nation of the ancient world? Khara’s life has been spent preparing for the day when she will become Egypt’s first ruling woman. A dutiful daughter, she embraces a future already written in stone. Until the day of her coronation, when her father is brutally murdered, plunging the House of Pharaoh into what history will come to know as “70 rulers in 70 days.”
To save her life, she is unwittingly thrust into the future where she lands in the Mal Pais of the American Southwest. Confused and alone, she crosses the Mexican border illegally where she is rescued by Victoria Barron, a well-meaning if not emotionally misplaced immigration attorney. Together they must outmaneuver the artifact smuggler bent on keeping Khara, the find of a lifetime in the present for his own gain. Can they find a way to return Khara to the past to claim her destiny? What happens to history as we know it if they fail?
Misplaced is a genius novel that is unlike anything I have read before. When I read the description of Misplaced I was shocked by how incredible it sounded because usually descriptions do not pull me in but the description of Misplaced did straight away and I will explain why. The mention of Ancient Egypt as well as a female woman who is set to rule Egypt fascinated me as I adore Ancient Egypt and learning about it. But what sold me was the fact that time travel is then mentioned and I knew since that point onwards that I had to read the book! Every now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what Misplaced n did to me… it blew me away and ever since completing it I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it! That is when you know book lovers that you have come across an incredible book when you are thinking of it when you have a million things to do. That is why I am already going to recommend Misplaced to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but Misplaced is a novel not to be missed.
Misplaced will take the reader on a journey back in time to Ancient Egypt and will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Khara. Khara is an Egyptian princess, and she has spent her life knowing that one day she will rule Egypt; this is scary enough but it is even more so because she will be the first female Egyptian ruler which puts a lot of pressure on her shoulders to do well but she is embracing it because after all, her future has literally been carved in stone since birth. However, on the day of Khara’s coronation, a monumental day for Khara and Egypt, her father is brutally murdered leaving the House of Pharaoh in a state of shock. What also happens to the House of Pharaoh is something called ’70 rules in 70 days,’ and this will cause many shocking and disastrous events. So much so that Khara, in order to survive travels to the future and lands in Mexico where she will have to cross the border illegally into Texas.
It is in Texas where she will meet Victoria Barron, an immigration lawyer who takes a liking to Khara and decide to not only believe her story but to help her and to help her go back in time to reclaim her destiny. What follows is a fast-paced, intriguing tale that will satisfy readers thriller and science fiction needs and will entertain readers for hours on end!
Misplaced for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. Misplaced was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, S.L. Hulen who hooked me with her unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a time travel/historical fiction novel that is refreshing, and it is even more challenging to discover a time travel story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! Misplaced does have some action-packed moments however they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!
S.L. Hulen is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Hulen instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in historical fiction novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly but with Hulen, the reader will not encounter this issue because Hulen instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.
Overall Misplaced is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so, I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars! If you are a reader who loves historical fiction, science fiction or even fantasy then I implore you to read Misplaced; it is a fast-paced, action adventure that should not be missed so have a read of the preview below and get reading! Be sure to keep an eye out for my spotlight for S.L. Hulen too book lovers which will be live next week!
